The geophysical borehole site investigations were done by WE Consult and the results were presented in a WE Consult report 201328. Siting was done at various points in the school; in the end, two points were successfully drilled and installed with hand pumps and are serving the school. The contractual arrangement was such that if the first drilling attempt yielded more than 1,000 litres per hour, then only one borehole would be drilled. However, if the first drilling attempt yielded less than 1,000 litres per hour, a second borehole would be drilled. The first drilling attempt yielded 400 litres per hour, prompting the contractor to drill a 2 nd attempt which fortunately yielded just the minimum of 1,000 litres per hour. This in the end translated to the client having 2 boreholes, as it was later agreed that that both wells be installed with hand pumps. The contractor carried out the drilling, design installation and well development between 11th and 23rd October 2013. Test pumping and platform casting was done on two separate occasions for the two boreholes; long duration test pump of 4 steps and 12 hour constant test on the 2nd borehole DWD 41415 was done between 23rd and 24th October 2013, while short constant rate test on the 1st borehole DWD 47551 was done on 31st October 2013. On discussion with the client, both wells were considered for installation of a hand pump. Although both wells did not post excellent yields, they all have water able to sustain a hand pump. Moreover, in this area, available data did not indicate high chances of achieving better higher yielding boreholes. Air and mud rotary drilling methods were used to drill the boreholes with the help of an ELGI 450cfm, 150 Psi capacity compressor and the mud pump. The same compressor was used to carry out well development. The rig was equipped with drag bits, DTH hammers, and button bits of different sizes. The drill rods used were 3” in diameter and average lengths of 2m. Drilling in the overburden was achieved using a 10” and an 8” drag bit. Drilling was accomplished by use of either 6.5” button bit reamer or 4.5” drill bit in the hard rock. In highly collapsing overburden formation, the mud rotary drilling method was adapted using a mud pump mounted on the PAT drilling rig, while in other cases, temporary casings were used to enable clean drilling below the collapsing formation. 3 Logistics and Communication The drilling team lodged in Kumi town council, which is very near to the site. This ensured that work commenced very early. Contact between the field and office was through mobile telephones using the MTN, UTL, WARID and Airtel networks, whereas contact between the contractor and the client was through e-mails and phone calls. 4 Results of the drilling programme 4.1 Drilling The drilling team mobilized the drilling equipment and materials on 10th October 2013 and drilling commenced the next day and ended on 23rd October 2013. The average depth to bedrock is 15.66 m bgl and the average depth to weathered rock is 11.65 m. The average main water strike for the 2 boreholes is 20.81 m. Wiggins P/S-01(DWD 47551) borehole was low yielding, with an airlift yield of 220 l/hr, after well development the yield enormously increased to even sustain test pumping yield of 500 l/hr. Wiggins P/S-02 (DWD 41415) borehole had a higher yield of 1,000 l/hr. 4.2 Test Pumping Results For this particular project, the main objective of test pumping was to determine the safe yield and optimum installation depth of the pump (hand pump or motorized pump). Four to five step tests (4 hours for 4 steps and 16 minutes for the 5th step) followed by recovery monitoring before a 12 hour constant rate test were carried for Wiggins P/S-02 borehole, while Wiggins P/S-01 was test pumped for a short constant rate test of 3 hours. Both tests were followed by recovery monitoring till a minimum of 90% of the created drawdown was recovered. At the end of test-pumping, a water sample was collected and taken to the laboratory of National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), Bugolobi, Kampala, for Physical-chemical quality analysis. The data collected from test pumping has been analysed and is presented in Annex 2, while a summary is presented in Table 4. The recovery of the low yielding well is lower than the other borehole The analysed results of test pumping are given in details in Annex 2. 4.3 Water Quality Analysis Reports One of the main objectives of any water supply project is to provide the community with water of a good quality, which should be colourless, odourless and pleasant to taste. At the end of the test-pumping, a water sample was collected by the contractor for analysis of physio-chemical parameters for the water of each of the 2 boreholes. Water quality analysis was done at National Water and Sewerage Corporation, Bugolobi, Kampala. The results of the water quality analysis are presented in Annex 3 Borehole Completion report, SSK in Kumi district, Uganda 3 TGS Water Ltd – Report: 201328 SSK-Wiggins P/s Kumi From the analysed samples, it’s indicative that all the samples showed satisfactory physio-chemical characteristics, although apparent colour and total suspended solids were slightly higher than national permissible standards for potable water. These two parameters are however not disease causing but may have some impact on source acceptability. The contractor suspects that, the apparent colour are a characteristic of the water bearing rocks in the area rather than a construction problem as all efforts were made to ensure proper well construction was achieved. According to the water quality analysis certificates, the water is fit for both domestic and livestock usage. 4.4 Platform Construction After successfully drilling and test pumping the boreholes, a concrete platform was cast with a platform ring of 1.6m diameter and a drainage channel of 6m long. Platform construction of the 1st borehole DWD 47551 was done later on 31st October 2013, due to a delayed decision making from the client on whether this borehole would be installed or be left as a monitoring borehole as had been suggested by the contractor since it was a low yielding borehole. Table 4 presents a summary of a schedule for platform construction. Averagely the hand pump installation depth was 33 m. Both boreholes were installed with UII Indian Mark hand pumps of AJAY MAKE. The client plans to monitor the working of the wells as fundraising for a solar pumped system is done, based on Wiggins P/S-02 borehole. 5 Conclusion and Recommendations 5.1 General Conclusion and discussions The project had technical and project success rates of 100 %. TGS Water ltd defines a 100% project success as one where the whole target of the client has been achieved, irrespective of how many drilling attempts or how much it cost the client. We also consider a 100% technical success rate for a project when all the drilling attempts made have a yield acceptable for a hand pump. In Uganda, 500 litres per hour is the national acceptable minimum yield for a borehole to be installed with a hand pump. However, there are even individual districts that have lowered this threshold to 300 litres per hour due to an extreme low ground water potential in such specific areas within districts. In this particular project, all the two boreholes drilled have a sustainable yield equal to or above 500 litres per hour, translating to a technical & project success rate of 100%. Water Quality analyses’ results for the two successful villages indicate that, although the apparent colour and total suspended solids are slightly higher than the maximum Borehole Completion report, SSK in Kumi district, Uganda 4 TGS Water Ltd – Report: 201328 SSK-Wiggins P/s Kumi permissible limits for potable water in Uganda, in general, the water was fit for domestic and livestock consumption. 5.2 1. 2. 3. Recommendations Based on analysis of test pumping data, it was recommended to install the hand pump in Borehole 1 at 42 and borehole 2 at 24 m below ground level respectively. In future, an electric pump of 1,000 liters per hour operating at a maximum of 10 hours a day can be installed at 30m below ground level in DWD 41415.
