Chapter -11 Terms 1. Collective identity: The shared identity of a group of people, especially because of a common language and culture 2. Legitimize: To acknowledge as valid 3. Francophone: A person whose first language is French 4. Anglophone: A person whose first language is English 5. Aboriginal peoples: First nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, as defined by Canada’s constitution 6. Collective rights: Rights that protect the language and culture of groups within society, such as francophone and aboriginal peoples 7. Official language minority: A group that speaks one of Canada’s official languages (English or French) and that does not make up the majority population of a province or territory 8. Visible minority: A group of people whose appearance distinguishes them from a majority population 9. World war i: A global war, centred in Europe, that took place between 1914 and 1918 10. Interned: Imprisoned in camps 11. World war ii: A global war that took place between 1939 and 1945 12. Racial discrimination: Different treatment or policies for different groups of people, based on their race 13. Urbanization: An increase in the number of people living in cities and the expansion of cities into rural areas 14. Mechanization: Using machines to do jobs instead of people
