16-19 Centre Dress Code 2020-21
1.1 NAME School 16-19 Centre has no formal uniform. The aim of this dress code is to allow
young people to express themselves as individuals, but in an appropriate and modest way. It
places an emphasis on the important role that our Post-16 young people have in contributing
to the ethos of the wider school.
1.2 Young people should dress appropriately for the subjects they are studying, particularly
those following vocational programmes or attending work experience placements.
1.3 Our Post-16 students act as ambassadors for, and role models to the rest of the school;
they need to set the standard of dress and general conduct against which other young people
judge themselves and to which they aspire.
1.4 Post-16 students should remember their dignity and set the standard for others. The
following items do not meet NAME 16-19 Centre’s expectations of dressing modestly:
Strapless, backless, or string-strapped tops
Clothing which is revealing; for example, exposing bare midriffs or bottoms
Caps or hats worn indoors, or any item which obscures the face (with the exception
of appropriate COVID-19 related facemasks in line with school and college policy)
Clothing which reveals underwear
Clothing with offensive logos
2.1 Visible body piercings are restricted to the ears and/or one small/discrete nose stud/ring
only. Bars, scaffolds, mouth piercings and stretchers are not permitted. Septum piercings,
including rings are not permitted. Jewellery must be removed before physical education or
where it may interfere with the vocational training of a student. Large items of jewellery that
could cause a health and safety risk, for example, hooped earrings and large nose studs are
not permitted. Students must remove items of jewellery when requested to by staff.
2.2 Make-up may be worn, but this should be discrete. Eye shading/shadow is permitted.
2.3 Acrylic nails, other than those of a natural length and shape are not permitted.
2.4 Tattoos should not be visible.
3.1 The Head Teacher / Deputy Head Teacher will make a final decision on whether clothing
and presentation is suitable and falls within this policy.
