Evaluation a Unit content
The taken results of Needs analysis showed that Learners have low
grammar knowledge in beginner level. Now they must improve their all
skills in English. So, I decide to choose Round-up 1 which the book
encircle all skills in order to develop their skills and methods. Round- up
1 English Grammar Practice combines games and fun with serious
systematic grammar points clearly presented in colourful boxes and
tables. They practise grammar through lively, highly illustrated games,
oral and writing activities. My choosen 11 unit of the coursebook give
information about Present Simple Tense for learners. Learners learn
what is Present Simple Tense, how to use it and its rules by tasks based
on all skills.
The material which is choosen in the unit is intended for learners who is
beginner level. There are exercises to be practiced for all skills(listening,
speaking, reading and writing). The proportion of work on each skill is
that learners are taught new theme by each skills easily. Basically,
Writing and speaking skills play a big part in this unit. Such as, to make
chain story, to ask and answer questions with their partner for speaking
skill and to make sentences, to complete the sentences and to write
about their daily routine for writing skill. Even, there is task to be
practiced the pronouncation to learners. During the understanding of
the new theme, learners mainly do individual work and partly pair work,
there is no group work. This unit should be add again a activity for
reading and listening skills and shorten given activities for writing skill or
change other tasks. If I say to be suitable activities with my students'
age, level, cultural background. It absolutely correspond them. Because
my learners are around 11 and 12 years old and also beginner level. If
we don't consider that the unit has a lot of materials for writing skill.
This materials are very interisting for learners. Theme " Present Simple
Tense" is taught by activities easily. For example, if we take to make
chain story to use Present Simple. In this activity, an begun story is given
to learners and they should continue the story to use Present Simple
Tense. There is no real-life interactions in this unit. The approaches and
methods of the activities are suitable for the learners. Learners are
explained the new theme by activities based on Audio-Lingual method,
Communicative Language teaching, task-based approach, Lexical
approach, methods of teaching pronounciation, speaking, listening,
reading, writing. For example, in htis unit learners should:
 Fill in the correct form of the verbs.
 Wrtie do, does and short answers.
 Look at the pictures and complete the sentences.
 Listen and repeat. Then act out
 Complete the sentences as in the examples.
 Read and match. Listen and check.
 Write sentences
 Ask and answer questions with partner.
 Write about their daily routine.
My objectives improve 4 skills and explain new topic learners. The
reason why unit includes all skills, unit can support learners' needs.
An example of this is the examples, I mentioned above. The unit is
suitability designed with pictures, tables understandable concepts.
There is no the materials which reflect other skills. The level of
difficulty of the exercises gradually increases. For instance, If the
learners have to put the word forms correctly in exercises 1,2,3 they
will have to make the whole sentences in the next exercises using the
Present Simple Tense. The arranged time can come one bu one if
timing will be divided time for activities in the process suitability.
In conclusion, I have found that this unit of coursebook is more
interesing and effective for learners grammatically. But this unit can't
improve critical thinking of learners and their vocabulary.
In conclusion, this book teaches only grammatical rules based on
materials. So I have to choose a separate book for the dictionary.
