PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action
Relaxes bronchial and vascular smooth
muscle by stimulating beta2 receptors.
Therapeutic Use
-Prevent/treat bronchospasm with reversible
destructure airway disease.
-Prevents exercise induced bronchospasm
-Hyperkalemia/asthma increase palpitation
Complications
-Increase heart rate
-Insomnia
-Dizziness
-Headache
-Nausea/vomiting
Medication Administration
-Comes in 2 mg & 4mg tablets
-Comes in 100mcg/actuation for
inhalation
-Comes in 2mg/5mL syrup
Contraindications/Precautions
-Sensitive to drug
-Hypertension
-Stroke risk
-Diabetes mellitus
Nursing Interventions
-Inhaler use education
-Use cautiously with coronary
insufficiency, HTV,
hyperthyroidism.
Interactions
-CNS stimulants may increase CNS stimulation. Avoid
using together.
-Diuretics may cause ECG changes and hypokalemia.
-May decrease potassium levels
