Lesson Plan Class:1st Form Subject: Geography Date: March 1-11 Topic: Population Migration, Settlement Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson students should be able to Define the terms, Population, Population Distribution Population Density. Using a dot map, describe Jamaica's population distribution. Given population data create a simple dot map Outline how three (3) major physical features influence the population distribution in Jamaica. Explain the reason for population concentration in coastal zones in Jamaica Materials: Nearpod, Power point, Video presentation, handout, worksheets, exit ticket Teaching Methods: Brainstorming, ThinkPair-Share, collaboration, jigsaw key terms: Population, Distribution, Density, census, Birth, Death Engagement Activity: Students will watch an introductory video on population. They will answer guiding questions in order to arrive at definitions for the key terms. Exploration: They will then collaborate to design a way to represent distribution on the map. Students will share their ideas with the whole group and then compare their methods to that of a dot map of Jamaica. Students will be placed in groups and given the following terms (population distribution, Population density, Dot map, Choropleth map) and corresponding notes they will break out and discuss the information and return to the whole class and teach their information with the whole group. Explanation: Students will be shown an image of a dot map and asked to describe the distribution of Jamaica's population. They will then use a physical map and resource map of Jamaica to identify what physical features and resources have led to the spread of the population in such a way. Lesson Plan Elaboration: In their breakout groups, students will create a table from given information along with their atlases showing major landforms in the 14 parishes of Jamaica, total population in those parishes and where population is concentrated (inland or coastal). They will present their findings to the class. Evaluation: Students will create a digital presentation on the topic population. (see rubric in notes) Plan 1of 3
