Kamikaze
A kamikaze pilot is someone who flies their plane directly
into a target so that they can complete their mission, even
though it means they will die.
It is about the idea (concept) of ‘Kamikaze’ rather than the
individual pilot
The one where the Japanese fighter pilot chooses not to die, but then no one
speaks to him for the rest of his life
• Structure:
• The poem is written in direct speech (as if she is
saying the poem to the reader)
• It was written in 2007- Beatrice Garland is NOT
the actual daughter
• Key Lines:
• Her father embarked at sunrise
• Which had been the better way to die
• Safe/ to the shore, salt-sodden, awash/ with
cloud marked mackerel
• The dad was a Kamikaze pilot, who got half way to his
target and turned around because he saw the fishing
boats which reminded him of his own father and how
worried he used to be when his father was away at sea,
so he came back (so that his children would have him in
their lives) BUT the whole society (including his family)
were ashamed of him- so they ignored him and believed
he was not who they thought he was.
• The final line shows she regrets the way they treated
her dad
