Naga City Science High School Balatas, Naga City SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL S/Y 2020 – 2021 EARTH SCIENCE MODULE NO. 2 MINERALS AND ROCKS ACTIVITY 5: Rock can follow many different pathways through rock cycle. Read the example below. Then answer the questions that follow. Pathway 1 Between New Zealand and South America, at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, molten material from the mantle erupts from the mid-range ridge. As the material comes into contact with the very cold ocean water, it cools quickly to become a rock. Over time, this rock ever slowly moves away from the mid-range ocean ridge, as seafloor spreading makes changes in the ocean floor. About 200 million years later, the rock is subducted at a deep ocean trench. As the rock moves downward, it melts to become part of the mantle. Eventually this melted material moves back up through the mid-ocean ridge to become rock again. 1. Which major group or groups of rock are involved in the description? 2. Make a flowchart that describes what occurs in Pathway 1. Rubric: Category Organization and Layout Below Average Not organized, flowchart makes no sense and is not clear. (1-3 points) Average Connections are highly linear. It is slightly unclear. (4-6 points) Above Average Organized, diagram for the most part is clear. (7-8 points) Quality and Accuracy of Information Unable to find specific details and/or details are mostly inaccurate. (1-3 points) Most section of the diagram contains factual errors. Details are somewhat ambiguous and/or somewhat inaccurate. (4-6 points) Some use of arrows and/or format of a flow chart; somewhat confusing. (4-6 points) Most information and concepts of the diagram contains correct information. Some details are not relevant to process. (7-8 points) Neatness No use of arrows and/or format of a flow chart; confusing and untidy. (1-3 points) MINERALS AND ROCKS Excellent Good organization, flow is logical, and easy to follow. Concepts are highly interconnected. (9-10 points) Each section of the diagram contains correct and accurate information. Steps are very specific to process. (9-10 points) Use of arrows and Excellent use of correct format of a flow chart flow chart; slightly format; not at all confusing. confusing. (7-8 points) (9-10 points)
