My study explores the importance of interpersonal skills for accountants. Sources being considered include the following: Mason, M 2018 ‘Interpersonal skills: the new essentials in accounting’, Accountancy Matters, vol. 46, pp.28-48. In this article Mason reviews the influence of gender and age on interpersonal skills of accountants and how this affects customer relationships. The author uses data gained through organisational surveys of 3 large accounting firms in Perth, Australia, to identify the main causes of customer satisfaction and whether there is a link to the interpersonal skills of client-facing accountants. The study focuses on assessing the dynamics of relationships between clients and accountants based on interpersonal abilities. It further questions whether this is influenced by the gender and age of the different parties involved. The article is useful to my research topic because Mason suggests that interpersonal skills are not only important for relationships, but also determine how much customers will spend and whether they will recommend the firm. The main limitation of the article is that the survey sample was restricted to just 3 companies in Perth’s CBD. It is not clear whether other factors like proximity to a client’s home/workplace might affect relationships. The limited numbers also make it difficult to determine an actual trend. This article will not form the main basis of my study; however, it does provide some useful knowledge about interpersonal skills in accounting, and it will be referred to in my report.
