Charles Dickens was born in 1812 in Portsmouth, England. He was
one of the greatest English novelists. His family lived in London. His father
worked as a clerk in an office. There were eight children in his family and life
became very hard. Charles went to school and his teachers thought he was very clever. But
at the age of 12, he began to work in a factory, where he washed bottles. When he was 16
years old, he started working for a newspaper.He also wrote short
stories for magazines. Over his career, he edited a weekly journal for
20 years, wrote 15 novels, 5 novellas and hundreds of short stories.
Among his famous novels: “ Oliver Twist”( 1838) and“ David
Copperfield”( 1850). Charles Dickens died on 9th June 1870.
