Occupational Health and Safety
In today’s situation, we are battling the pandemic caused by the covid-19, as a student,
you should know how to behave anywhere and follow health protocols and policies especially
when you do a task at home to accomplish. Safety practices should be always followed in
working with any electrical and electronic device, including personal computers and its
peripherals. This is for your safety and protection in the absence of computer laboratory use
in the school and to the people around you and for the device that you are using.
Occupational safety and health (OSH) is a planned system of working to prevent illness
and injury where you work by recognizing and identifying hazards and risks. Health and safety
procedure is the responsibility of all persons anywhere especially in the working place where
you do a task. You must identify the hazards where you are working and decide how
dangerous they are. It is better to remove the hazard or modify the risk as early as possible to
avoid harm or possible collateral damage in the future.
World Health Organization (WHO) defines Occupational health as dealing with all aspects of
the health and safety of all workers. It is also defined health as a state of complete physical,
mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Hazard - is a possible source of harm or untoward effect on anyone’s health.
Risk - a situation involving exposure to danger or suffering untoward effects if
exposed to hazard\s.

Generally, hazards are expected to be found in the following:
• Physical work environment
• Equipment, materials, or substances used
• Work tasks and how they are performed
• Work design and management
Types of Workplace Hazards
1. Physical – utmost common hazard in the workplace
Example: loud noise, strong vibrations, electrical or damaged wires, unprotected machinery
2. Chemical – occurs when you are exposed to any chemical preparation in the workplace.
Example: solvents, heated solid particles, disinfectants, and gases or other flammable
materials
3. Biological – comes from working people, animals, or infectious plant material
Example: blood or other body fluids, bacteria, fungi, and other viruses, insect bites, and
animal droppings
