Safety practices should be always followed in working with any electrical and electronic device, including personal computers and its peripherals. This is for your safety and protection in the absence of computer laboratory use in the school and to the people around you and for the device that you are using. Occupational safety and health (OSH) is a planned system of working to prevent illness and injury where you work by recognizing and identifying hazards and risks. Health and safety procedure is the responsibility of all persons anywhere especially in the working place where you do a task. You must identify the hazards where you are working and decide how dangerous they are. It is better to remove the hazard or modify the risk as early as possible to avoid harm or possible collateral damage in the future. World Health Organization (WHO) defines Occupational health as dealing with all aspects of the health and safety of all workers. It is also defined health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Hazard - is a possible source of harm or untoward effect on anyone’s health. Physical – utmost common hazard in the workplace Example: loud noise, strong vibrations, electrical or damaged wires, unprotected machinery 2. Chemical – occurs when you are exposed to any chemical preparation in the workplace. Example: solvents, heated solid particles, disinfectants, and gases or other flammable materials 3. Biological – comes from working people, animals, or infectious plant material Example: blood or other body fluids, bacteria, fungi, and other viruses, insect bites, and animal droppings 4. Ergonomic – occurs when your working conditions put a strain on your body. Example: poor lighting or dim lights, improperly-adjusted workstations and chairs, frequent lifting, repetitive or awkward movements.
