INTRODUCTION
Every year, graduating senior highschool students are faced with the
problem of having to decide on future career paths.the decision whether or not to
continue with post secondary education and the choice of an institution to attend
or two critical decisions that students make at this time on their lives (Johnson
and Chapman, 1979).
Every senior high school is facing difficulty to find the right course they
want or what course they will pursue, or whether they will continue on, or just
stop their studying , Everyone want to be successful and it is not easy to achieve
so they need to pursue and more hard work, and also you need to plan about
your future so you need to know what is the right course you will take but most of
the graduating senior high school students are facing difficulty in choosing a
course because there is a lot of factors that affecting your career choice in
college that confuse many students what course is right for them or what course
they will take, these factors may include motivations or influence of peers,
families, teachers, job opportunities, and your own choice of course.
A student used to spend some time with their friends and family no matter
how busy they are, they still has a time to spend and a little chitchat can change
their minds, like in choosing a course, many students are depending their course

on what they friends want or what they think their friends like so they are being
influenced by their friends that would lead them changing what course they really
preferred and sometimes there are cases that it was their parents that was
influencing them like, they are pursuing what their parents prefer for them even
this is not what they want there are some may pursue what they want even this is
not what their parents want but most of them was forced by their parents to
pursue what course they preferred for their child and also one of the factors
that may affect the career choice in college of graduating senior high school is
job opportunity because most of senior high school want to be successful in life
or want to be rich so job opportunity may affect their choice of course because
some of them preferred a job that has a high salary income, or a job that was
available or demand in the future. The last factors is your choice of course, your
choice of course will also affect you in choosing a right course for you, because
most of us really want to pursue that course that we want but what if our own
choice of course is not the right choice we take or what if this isn't actually fit to
your personality? Then it may be a wrong choice but most of the students really
want to pursue their likes even their skills is not fitted to their course they want.
According to Splaver (1977)
personality plays an important role in choosing
the right career and also he said that it is important for you to have a good
understanding of yourself, your personality, if you are to make an intellegent
career plans.

Theoretical Framework
Developmental Theory of Career Development
In the study of Super’s (1990)
Developmental Theory of Career
Development,
High school students are at the exploration stage of career development,
which involves crystallizing and specifying their occupational preferences, while
also
making preliminary decisions about their career choice. The review of
related literature showed the areas of a students’s life affect the plans decision,
and career choice they make: Gender, Parental influence, and Peers influence.
The study attempted to identify and defferentiate to what extent these factors
played varying roles in future career choice.
Supeer (2005) stated that the students should first become aware of the
need for a career. So every graduating student needs a wise choice in decision
making. However, Bautista (1997) stated at this stage, as student must take and
vital decision in the selection of a career which will determine his/her future
success.

the common factors that may affects them in choosing course in college. Due to
the restriction of face to face interaction of students since it’s COVID-19
pandemic has happened, the conduct of the study would be done through
distribution of questionnaires using online platform utilizing google form to 25
G12 students as a survey and references. The potential weaknesses or problem
that the researcher may encounter are the time and availability of the
respondents, internet connectivity during the conduct of study since it requires to
use internet. The age limit of the respondent is 15-20 above years of age.
The delimitation of this study is to look for the factors that can affect the
grade 12 students to choose course in college in a different aspects in terms of
social factors which is consist of friends or peers and family. In psychological
factors that consist of motivation and job opportunities while in physical factors is
consist of school and aptitude. The last is finacial factor which is about financial.

LITERATURE REVIEW
This presents the literature, relevant to the concept of the present study. It
also analyze some studies and materials from the internet to provide sufficient
background and information essential for the accomplishment of this study. It
aims to collect claims of previous studies about factors affecting the Career
Choice in College of Grade 12 Senior High School students of NQCI.
Related Literature
Senior High School is an important period of time in an adolescent’s life. It
is the time that students are making decisions about their course taking and
future educational and career plans in their college life. Every students carries
the unique history of their past and this determines how they view the world. In
fact, one of the tasks of senior high school students is to explore and plan for
their post-secondary career options in entering tertiary level.
Career investigation explained that the Career selection is one of the most
important choices of students will make in determining future plans. This decision

will impart them throughout their lives in the future. The essence of the students
who will revolve around what the student want to do with their life-long work. The
choice of career has been a serious problem among the secondary school
students in Nigeria. No matter what one’s age is, the choice of career or desire is
an important question for everybody. A lot of student in secondary schools is
believe that their future is a glorious adventures in which they are bound to
succeed. Many of them have an idea that they would be able to work in the
public or private establishment as soon as they complete secondary school
education.
Foreign Literature
According to Howard stressed out that whenever students are in their high
school experience, they are the center of learning.
13
NORTHERN QUEZON COLLEGE INCORPORATED
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Brgy. Comon Infanta, Quezon
In traditional high school, the center of the system is content or subject,
not student learning. Howard and Ill present a system to promote the shift from
traditional content or subject-centered high schools which is called as
Collaborative Career Pathways a system of organizing the student learning
interest and aptitudes around career paths. It provides a structure for students to
reference their learning and comment each year of their high school experience.
It allows student to plan and practice their skills while creating a smooth and
successful transition to a post-secondary option.
Goffredson’s Developmental Theory of Occupational Aspiration describes
how people become attractive to certain occupations. Self-concept in vocational
development is the key factor to career selection and people want jobs that are
compatible with their self- image. The key determinants of self-concept are one’s
social class, level of intelligence, and experience with sex-typing. Roe’s need
approach emphasized that early childhood experiences play an important role in
finding satisfaction in one’s chosen field.
The need structure of the individual, according to Roe, would be greatly
influence by influence by early childhood frustration and satisfactions. According
to John Holland, individuals are attracted to a given career by their particular
personalities and numerous variables that constitute their backgrounds. First of
all, career choice is an expression of, or an extension of personality into the
world of work followed by subsequent identification with specific occupational
14

stereotypes. Accordingly, one chooses a career to satisfy to preffered modal
personal oreintation.
Modal personal orientation is developmental process established through
heredity and the individual’s life history of reacting to environmental demands. If
the individual has developed as strong dominant orientation, satisfaction is
probable in a correspanding occupational environment. If, however the
orientation is one of indecision, the livelihood of satisfaction diminishes.
Taylor, Harris (2004), stated families, parents and guardians in particular,
play a significant role in the occupational aspirations and career goal
development of their children. Without parental approval or support, students and
young adults are often reluctant to pursue—or even explore—diverse career
possibilities. Although parents acknowledge their role and attempt to support the
career development of their children, parental messages contain an underlying
message of “don’t make the same mistakes that I did.” These interactions may
influence adolescents and young adults to select specific collegiate majors or
pursue particular occupations.
Local Literature
Bautista (cited in Phillips, 1968), stated the greatest barrier among
students pursuing their own career and having command over their life is lack of
in -- depth knowledge of the said career. In addition, knowledge is required to
make valid career preferences.
15

Further he stated that elementary education provide a foundation for
formal education. It is when high school where students starts to feel tangibly
about career preferences. He cited Castillo (1963) who stressed the redirection
and guidance of high school youth because : it is in that stage where skill,
capacities and decision are developed. The youth should get a truth picture of
their aspirations and expectations. According to the theory of vocational
development by Supeer (2005). The sudents should first become aware of the
need for a career. So very graduating students needs a wise choice in decision
making. Bautista (1997) stated that at this stage a student must take important
and vita decision in tha selection of a career which will determine future success.
They need to find out the factors affecting the career course among high school
students impetus to this study.
Related Studies
There are different factors that affect students’ choice of course in college.
One of this is family related factors. Study revealed that Filipino immigrants and
non-immigrants rely heavily on their family’s decision-making.
Numerous studies (Knowles, 1998; Marjoribanks, 1997; Mau and Bikos,
2000; Smith, 1991; Wilson and Wilson, 1992) have found that college students
and young adults cite parents as an important influence on their choice of career.
Yet parents may be unaware of the influence they have on the career
development and vocational choice of their children.
16
NORTHERN QUEZON COLLEGE INCORPORATED
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Brgy. Comon Infanta, Quezon
Another study highlighted that parental involvement have positive impact
on Hmong / Mong adolescents’ education and career choice. Furthermore, it is
reported that parents are deeply involved and influential to their high-achieving
children’s college choices. The report also found open houses, dialogue with
college friends, alumni, and admitted-student programs are extremely influential
to students. The report claimed these sources are not well known, but very
powerful to student’s decision making for their college.
Respect for family is one of the most influential factors that impact Filipino
students’ career decision. It is concurred that “Out of respect and loyalty, it may
not be appropriate to express personal desires; rather, one may alter one’s
interests to maintain harmony.” As a sign of respect, Filipino children want to do
well for the sake of the family, follow parents’ advice about choosing a job or
major in college and lastly, make sacrifices for the family. Parents encourage
their children to choose a course that is affordable and demand in the future. The
decision of the students is based on financial status of their family. Being
informed and ready to choose a career path in every graduating students could
help them to prevent dropping out of school before entering tertiary level.
Personality and interest are not the only requirement for choosing a career. An
individual’s aptitude and intellectual abilities are important to have a potential
success in an area after undergoing some training in senior high school

experience that may affect their career choice or help them to choose a suitable
course for them.
Related Theories
In Maslow Hierarchy theories of needs which is fundamental theory of
individuals behaviour including the motivation of doing something. The students
choice of career may be attributed to their physiological needs, good, and decent
meals, shelter for safety, recognitions, and belongingness to the family, intrinsic
motivation of selfdiscover and actualisation.
Skinner’s Operant conditioning described that people behave or do
(refrain from doing) things because of rewards and punishments. Some of
students could have been forced to take the career because of fear (negative
stimulant) that they may end up regretting it in future.
In Piaget’s theory cognitive development explains how a child constructs a
mental model of the world. He disagreed with the idea that intelligence was a fix
trait, and their regarded cognitive development as a process which occurs due to
biological maturation and interaction with the environment.
In John Holland’s Theory of Vocational Choice, he stated that people who
choose to work in an environment compatible to their personality type are more
likely to be satisfied and be successful in the future. The theory is based from the
phrase, "Birds of the same feather flock together.", which means that people are

more likely to choose a career path in an environment which is suitable to their

METHODOLOGY
Research Design
This investigation is descriptive in nature. Descriptive research design is a
design to describe certain aim of the topic or a problem. It is being use to obtain
a general overview of the subject. The researchers decided to discover, explore,
and describes how the four factors affects the grade 12 students in Northern
Quezon College Incorporated to choose course in college. This method is used
to describe and to know the common factors that affect them in choosing a
course in college.
This study employed a descriptive quantitative research design. According
to Creswell (2002) noted that quantitative research is the process of collecting,
analyzing, interpreting, and writing the results of a study.

ICC or Infanta Community College, forms it into NQCC or Northern Quezon
Coorperative College in year 1988, and in year 2017 it became NQCI.
Participants
The participants of the study are the graduating Senior high school
students from ABM, HUMSS and STEM of Northern Quezon College
Incorporated (NQCI), School Year 2020-2021. The researchers choose grade 12
students because they are graduating and already near to reach college life, so
they are the number one beneficiaries to this study to answer the questions
accurate and reliable and also the researchers choose the respondents that are
willing to answer honestly and sincerely to easily identified the common factors

is not included in the given option. This was supplemented by observation and
answering the checklist. The researcher use likert scale, pie graphs, tables and
the frequency count the percentage distribution were use to be main statistical
treatment. Also the computation of the weighted mean and weighted average
mean.
The questionnaire is composed of two parts: first is concerned with the
description of the respondents in terms of their demographic profile such as
name, age, sex, and strand. Second part concerned the survey questions such
as always, sometimes, and never.
The survey questionnaire is consist of 4 domains which are the factors
choosing a course such as Social, Financial, Psychological, and Physical.
Everyone of factors has five questions. The questionnaires has a total of 35
questions.
Validation Technique
After the construction of the questionnaire it was given by the expert
teacher in the field of the study for construct and content validation. This is to
determine the loopholes of the research device. Feedback and constructive
criticism were given for the refinement of the survey questionnaire. The final
evaluation was conducted with the help of the adviser of the group in HUMSS 2B
with the final modification of some parts of the questionnair, and to significes that
the instrument is ready for the dissemination.

Statistical Treatment
To treat the data gathered and make sense of the numbers an appropriate
statistical treatment is applied. Since, the nature of the study
is descriptive
statistics were employed. To treat the demographic profile percentage was used.
The results were then tabulated and coverted into tables. According to Calmorin
(1997) a percentage is a way of expressing a proportion, ratio, or fraction in
relation to a whole, with 100% as the denominator.
Formula: Percentage=f/N X 100%
Where: f=frequency
N= population
Weighted Mean
The weighted mean was used to obtain the average opinion of
respondents in the questionnaire. Weighted mean refers to the set of data taken
from the average of the population (Broto, 2006).
The following formula was used:

Discussion:
Parental influence is highly supported and validated in many studies that
can affect the students in making decision but in this study, sometimes parent
influences the student in choosing their career path in future. In other words
family rarely affect the career choice of their children. Olaosebikan and Olusakin
(2014) indicated that parental influence will not have a significant effect on
adolescents career choice and that perception of parental occupational
satisfaction will not have effect on career aspiration of adolescents based on the
following intervening variables such as sex and type of school

Discussion:
Motivation have a positive effect in everyday life. It give us an advice to
achieve our goals and pursue our dreams. Anyone can motivate us in every
situation in terms of difficulties that we need to overcome especially in difficulties
in choosing course in college. Sometimes it may result that we choose a course
because someone said that is better and it is suited for us. According to Moslow
humans are inherently motivated to better themselves and move toward
expressing their full potential-self actualization – by progressively encountering
and satisfying several levels of needs from the most fundamental, such as for
food and safety , to higher order needs for love , belonging, and self esteem
Maslow extended the theory to include a need for self transcedence: people
reach the pinnacle of growth and find the highest meaning in life by attending to
things beyond the self. Although the universality of Maslow’s theory has been
challenged, many believe it captures fundamental truth about human motivation.
Motivating our classmates and friends is important in making decision in every
situation in our lives but sometimes accepting the advice of others can influence
us to choose a course in college.
