Essay Structure Introduction Begin with a sentence that will arouse the reader’s interest (hook) Provide any relevant courtesy details (e.g. the title of the book, author, year it was written, any key contextual information, etc.) A strong thesis statement (main argument which directly addresses the question/topic) Key points which reinforce the thesis, and these will be the main topics of each body paragraph (brief) Small link back to the question Body Paragraphs T – Topic sentence, which is the main idea/main argument of this paragraph. Everything discussed below this should relate back to it. This point should be ‘arguable’ E – Expand, give more details about the topic sentence E – Explore, give more details on why the previous statements mentioned are true and valid E – Evidence, which can be data, facts, or direct quotations from any relevant texts. Personal opinion can also be given here if required L – Link back to the question, and perhaps lead into the next paragraph Conclusion Give a thought-provoking statement or highlight possible consequences or implications Present an interesting twist of thought or state what actions are required Explain why these issues are prevalent and emphasise its importance
