Primary Pupils Author/s: Claris Caga Belgica, Janice A.Calugan, Juliet Ugay Dumo, Larilyn Akiapat Simber Source: https://www.dpublication.com/wpcontent/uploads/2020/12/3010340.pdf Publication Date: December 18-20, 2020 Objective/s of the study: The objective of the study is to identify the challenges faced by Educare College Inc. pupils in online distance learning. Finding/s: The findings of the study is that almost all of the respondents sought the help from their parents, grandparents, siblings, or other family members during online classes, especially in manipulating their gadgets and in answering their activities. If a family member is not available to help, the activity is postponed or set aside until someone is available to help. This is a real and authentic scenario in accomplishing given homework and activities. If nobody can assist the child, the tendency is to either learn or study independently or to just depend on others which would cause laziness and demotivation. On the other hand, in order to avoid unnecessary disturbances during the online class, most of them prepare what they need such as paper, pen, colors, and books so that when the teacher asks them to get pen and paper for example, they are readily available. A few mentioned parents taking charge of everything so that the pupils will not encounter any problem during the online class. This can confirm the previous answer of the respondents that parents cannot work full time because they really have to attend to their children. Conclusion: In conclusion, Online Distance Learning is an alternative to the traditional face-to-face learning since the pandemic emerged in the Philippines. Like other educational institutions, Educare College Inc., has opted for online learning in continuing education. While ODL has advantages, primary pupils at Educare encountered challenges during their online learning. These challenges include poor internet connection, poor comprehension and retention, lack of concentration, motivation, interaction and support. Focusing on the pupil’s ultimate goal in education should be a priority despite all the challenges online distance learning may bring. Recommendation/s: • In order to reduce the effect of these challenges, students together with parents and teachers, should work together. • Pupils and parents should stay in touch with their teachers and inform them regarding their situations and conditions. • Talking on the phone with classmates or to the teacher for missed lessons and notes will also be helpful. • Staying in touch with classmates and teachers can motivate students. • Students should also try to identify a quiet time and place in their house to complete their coursework, and if possible, building a schedule and sharing it to the members of the house so that they know when is the time for online class. • In case support is unavailable, pupils should look for answers to questions online and watch tutorial videos for items that require deeper understanding. Your insight: Online learning is an alternative to face-to-face classes, but it is also a challenge for us students. There is the possibility of power shortages, a lack of and poor internet connection, and the amount of radiation we can obtain from simply looking at a screen (which leads to eyesight problems). These are occurring because of the financial issues that most of us are experiencing because of the pandemic. Not everyone can afford to upgrade their devices and pay the additional fees associated with electricity use. We must be considerate if a student is frequently absent or tardy, perhaps passing an activity late. Because we have no idea what exactly their situation is or problem they're experiencing on that day. Also, not all students are capable of learning online on their own, so allowing students to seek assistance from their parents, friends, or other family members for their online classes, particularly in operating their devices and answering their modules, is advantageous to them. On that way, the children will learn even more, because someone will guide them to answer the activity, not a guide who will take care of everything so that pupils have no problem at all.
