Flower Dissection
Problem
Where are the reproductive structures of the flower and what do they look like?

Examine the outside of the flower and answer the following questions:
What is the colour of the flower?
How many petals does the flower have?
Describe the smell of the flower?
2. Compare the flowers you have seen walking to class by answering the following questions:
2.1 Do all the flowers have the same colour? If not, name the different colours.
2.2 Do all the flowers have the same size and shape? If not describe the various sizes and shapes.

Place one of the flowers provided by your lecturer on a white tile.
Use the tweezers to carefully remove the sepals.
Expose the ovary by using the tweezer to carefully remove the petals from the flower.
Using the dissecting knife or scalpel, cut the ovary in half.
Use the dissecting needle to carefully open up the ovary.

1. Draw a diagram of your dissected flower on the next page.

Refer to pg. 84 and 85 of the Siyavula Textbook Grade 7 for information on the flower. Use
this information to add labels to your diagram.
3. Study the anther of the flower using the dissection microscope. Describe what you see under
the microscope.
4. Study the stigma of the flower using the dissection microscope. Describe what you see under
the microscope.
