AO6: Content and Organisation (marked out of 24)
An engaging opening paragraph that establishes the setting, e.g.
Autumn/Summer. This is your first chance to set the style and
level for your Examiner.
Ambitious vocabulary throughout – see ambitious vocabulary
sheet. Remember- broad colour palette and specific verbs for
actions
Deliberately using paragraphs for effect – including onesentence, one-word, and complex.
Cyclical structure, including repeated sentence from the middle
of the flashback
Convincing and compelling range of devices. AVOID- As bright as the sun/As cold as ice/Like a
cheetah. These are NOT convincing or compelling. For example:
Assonance/consonance/sibilance- to create atmosphere
Metaphor/simile- comparisons for effect
Anaphora- sentences repeated in sequence for specific effect
Juxtaposition/oxymoron
Imagery/use of symbols- very important for Grade 9 crafting of
writing
Opening sentences with adjectives or adverbs- I/The/As/Then
are not permitted for this task.
AO6: Technical Accuracy (marked out of 16)
Full range of punctuation- this should feel natural and not
forced:

Full range of sentences – simple, short, complex, compound.
NO SPaG errors, including spelling in complex words
