Cultural Diversity Statement:

We as San Bernardino Valley College Students enhance the learning experience in
the classroom and field for all students through exposure to new perspectives on
cultures, beliefs, and practices by committing to public engagements with
organizations and community groups serving marginalized populations and
extending opportunities to disadvantaged people.
Religious/ Spiritual beliefs and practices
1. Roman Catholic

Christianity is the predominant religion in Honduras, representing 87% of the total
population according to a 2017 estimate.
Cultural preservation for religion: Provide client with a bible or literature that will help with
coping with their concerns during the birth process.
Cultural accommodation for religion: Be sensitive to their religious belief and even pray if
asked even if you don’t believe. In case of any complicated child birth complications.
Cultural repatterning for religion: “I understand that you may want to place a red ribbon
around stomach or wrist to protect of evil spirits but make sure to follow up with the doctor for
baby current health conditions.”
2. Family Process
a) Men are considered head of the household and women assume the role of the head of
the family and take care of family affairs
b) Family loyalty is an ingrained and unquestioned virtue; from early childhood,
individuals learn that relatives are to be trusted and relied on, whereas those outside
the family are, implicitly at least, suspect.
c) Family ties are strong and believe in natural remedies versus medical
recommendations
Cultural preservation for family process: Know who to talk to in case of a serious condition is
present in the baby after birth.
Cultural accommodation for family process: Allow ONLY immediate family to be present
who want to be present during the child birth process.
Cultural repatterning for family process: herbal remedies for common illnesses, I would
recommend you seek medical services to treat any serious medical conditions.
