Problem Statement: Design an innovative cabinets which are the built-in furniture installed in lab storage room for storage of Lab coat, safety googles, gloves, and other safety equipment for lab safety purpose. In the design of a modern lab storage area, the design of storage is a principal part because the volume of the cabinets will determine the spare space for other electric power tools and storages. A sample cabinet design is shown in the figure below. Figure 1 Sample Cabinet Design 1|Page Guidelines: The engineering design process is a series of steps you as an engineer will be performing in creating functional product. Since you are taking a lab in Design and Manufacturing, you are going to perform all the steps involved in the design process. The heart of any design for manufacturing system is a group of design principles or guidelines that are structured to help the designer reduce the cost and difficulty of manufacturing an item. Step 01: Literature review: It is an important step in the design process. In this step you are going to perform a detailed research on the scholarly articles, books, market search, and other relevant resources in your field of research. At the end of this section, you have to come up with a Preliminary Design. Step 02: Preliminary Design: From the preliminary design, you will develop the conceptual design. Step 03: Conceptual Design: In this phase, you will generate different alternatives of your design, then perform a decision matrix on the alternatives. In decision matrix for example: you will include easy of manufacturing, reduced cost, less use of material as well as type of material will be the parameters used in the decision matrix. And based on the decision matrix, you will come up with the best design Model. Step 04: 3D modeling phase and Production: Once the best model is selected, you will start with the 3D modeling phase. The 3D model will be produced using the Fusion 360 or any other software such as Auto CAD, SolidWorks or ANSYS. Here you will specify what you will use for manufacturing or choose the right manufacturing tool or process for example Hand tools, power tools, CNC Machines, or 2|Page 3D printers etc. And finally you will provide us the STL file or CAD file later for printing or CNC G- Code which will undergo testing and analysis for the small parts.
