Identify your learner type
Graduate applications and employment
Learning how to study and 1 acquire/focus/research
the information we’re being taught is something
we’re rarely shown how to do. We’re expected
to have an innate 2 reaction/method/capacity for
learning, as well as the ability to 3 focus/retain/study
knowledge without too much trouble. However, we
all know that while one 4 reaction/method/capacity
of teaching and learning works well for some, it
doesn’t suit everyone. For example, the ability to
5 focus/research/retain on one thing for a period
of time without the mind wandering off is a rare
skill in people, however intelligent they are. While
6 process/research/capacity is constantly being
carried out into ways of improving our learning
skills, there is still no ‘one size fits all’ solution and
the 7 capacity/process/reaction people have to
different stimuli can vary widely. The 8 research/
process/capacity of learning is complex and
different for all of us. It is therefore important for
students to identify which kind of learner they are
and recognise what their 9 capacity/focus/process
needs to be on in order to achieve the best results.

Despite university admissions 1 plummeting/climbing/
soaring nationwide in the past two years, our university
figures are still very positive, helped by the 2 reduction/
range/width in number of courses we offer. In the last
year, there has been no change in the number of students
applying for our accountancy courses. That’s the third
year running that the figures have remained 3 stable/
sharp/slightly. On the other hand, there has been a 4 slow/
stable/slight decrease in the number of people interested
in doing an MBA which, until now, has been extremely
popular. Although interest has 5 soared/climbed/lessened
in the MBA courses, there has been a 6 sharp/slower/
wide rise in applications for science degrees, which is
very encouraging. The number of science courses taken
by students has 7 dropped/climbed/plummeted to its
highest level this year as a result of the 8 drop/decline/
growth in the number of job vacancies in scientific
industries. The percentage of students who have found
jobs immediately after their degree has 9 fluctuated/
declined/soared slightly over the past five years, reaching
84 percent five years ago, 79 percent two years ago and
83 percent last year. Despite unemployment rates
10 stabilising/soaring/widening over this period, our
figures for graduate employment are very good indeed.

Digital learning research
The university has just 1
research into digital
learning in the workplace. Questionnaires were sent to course
producers, companies and employees and, not unsurprisingly,
these questionnaires 2
differing reactions
from the participants. Course producers and academic experts
believe that digital learning is as good as or better than classroom
training, while companies sing the praises of its cost-effectiveness.
However, user feedback is not so favourable. Employees do not
believe that information is 3
any more easily
in the digital environment than in a classroom situation and they
question the relevance of the courses to their particular work.
Another factor is whether the training indicates if the staff have
4
the level of intellectual skill expected of
them or whether the tests results 5
their
intelligence appropriately. In another section of the questionnaire,
participants 6
their attention on whether they
thought that retention of knowledge was longer-lasting in the digital
environment. Once again opinion was divided.
