HOW TO ANSWER DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. Please write YOUR NAME on your paper. Also, COPY THE QUESTION at the top of your paper and indicate WHICH CHAPTER the question is from. Thank you! 2. Academic Integrity If you quote directly from any source, be it an individual, an encyclopedia, a magazine, book, etc., you MUST put quotation marks around the quoted words and give a citation telling whose words they are, and exactly where and when they were published. This includes material taken from the Internet. Failure to do this is called “plagiarism,” is considered a form of stealing, and nice, well-meaning folks like you wouldn’t dream of doing this. Even if you substantially change the words from your source material, you STILL must give credit to where you got information or original ideas — if you quote statistics, explain an idea, or in any way obtain information from another source — even if you have completely rephrased it into your own words, you must give a full citation including author, title, date publication, page numbers, etc. Again, this is not a “little thing.” It is a question of honesty and fairness. 3. Doing Your Own Work What I am looking for in the answers to the Discussion questions is YOUR ideas in YOUR words. Although you certainly can get information from other sources (often you are told to) IF you give proper credit for it, what really counts is how well you answer the question in your own words. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Answer each question thoroughly in your own words. Use proper grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. Use complete sentences. If you use material from ANY other source—including Web pages—you must give a complete citation to that source. Also, you must rephrase such material into your own words. Direct quotations must be in quotation marks and cannot exceed two sentences in length.
