General Comments / Feedback:
General Instructions: Answer all the activities in this test clearly and correctly. Remember to
use BLACK or BLUE pen. It is forbidden to borrow any type of material, to use liquid paper or
comment during the assessing time.
Series I: Identify each statement as hypothesis or theory. For hypothesis write H and
for theory write T on the line. (1 point each)
______ 1. The growth rate of grass is related to the amount of light it receives
______ 2. All life is related to and comes from a common ancestor.
______ 3. The universe began about 15 billion years ago.
______ 4. New tennis balls bounce more than old tennis balls.
______ 5. Caffeine raises blood pressure.
Series II: On the line before each term, write the letter of the definition that matches
it correctly. (0.5 points each.) You need distractors in your answers (so more choices
than they can actually have)
______ 6. Biology
______ 7. Bias
______ 8. Homeostasis
b. act of recording and describing events or
processes in a careful and organized way
c. living things that maintain an internal
environment relatively stable
______ 9. Metabolism

code
______ 10. DNA
e. point of view that is personal and not
scientific
______ 11. Control Group
______ 12. Independent Variable
______ 13. Dependent variable
______ 14. Biosphere
______ 15. Observation
a. In one experiment, the group exposed to the
same conditions that the experimental minus
one variable
f. planet of living beings
g. combination of chemical reactions through
which an organism accumulates or breaks
down substances.
h. In an experiment, the variable being
manipulated
i. In an experiment, the variable that responds to
the change
j. study of life
k. macromolecules
l. atmosphere

Series IV Experiment Parts Identification. Read the background information about the experimental
scenario. Then, complete the numbered steps below. 15 points total
Background Information: A student investigated whether ants dig more tunnels in the light or in the
dark. She thought that ants used the filtered light that penetrated the upper layers of earth and
would dig more tunnels during the daytime. Ten ant colonies were set up in commercial ant farms
with the same number and type of ants per ant farm. The same amount of food was given to
each colony, and the colonies were in the same temperature. Five of the colonies were exposed
to normal room light and five were covered with black construction paper so they did not receive
light. Every other day for 19 days the length of the tunnels was measured in millimeters using a
string and a ruler.
25. Hypothesis
Identify the experimenter’s hypothesis in an “If…then…” format. Make sure the hypothesis uses
measurable variables. 2 points

26. Identification of Experiment Parts
Identify the parts of a controlled experiment listed in the table below. 6 points

Dependent Variable
Control group (s)
Experimental group (s)
27. Data Analysis
How could the data below be analyzed? (Be specific…don’t just say “graph it…” or “average it…”
What would be graphed? What labels would be on each of the axes? What would be
averaged?) 2 points

28. Conclusions
What conclusions can be made from the data? Does the data support or reject the hypothesis?
Use data to justify your response. 3 points

29. Future Improvements
How could the experimental procedure be improved for future experiments? Identify at least two
improvements. 2 points
