Tembilahan, 28 Desember 2021 Yang Membuat Pernyataan ABDUL RAHMAN SYAH BUKU JAWABAN UJIAN UNIVERSITAS TERBUKA 1. There is a statement which is illustrated the connection between language and culture, “To know another language and not his culture is a very good way to make a fluent fool of one’s self”. Please explain briefly what does it means! √ To know another’s language and not his culture is a very good way to make a fluent fool Of one’s self. Language is part of culture and also its reflection. Therefore, teaching a language means teaching its culture. It is obvious that learners can’t master a language without grasping its culture. Maintaining your first language is critical to your identity and contributes to a positive self – concept. Linguistic proficiency also help immigrant to preserve Culture and linguistic connections to their home country, and being fluent in another language helps foreigners adjust more easily to new culture. 2. Taylor defined culture as “that complex whole which included knowledge, belief, art, moral, Custom and any others capabilities acquired by a man as a member of society.” And He defined anthropology as a study of culture. Culture has six characteristic. Please explain 3 of them! √ 1. Culture is learned. It is not biological; we don’t inherit it. Much of learning culture is unconscious. We learned culture from families, peers, institutions, and media. The process of learning culture is known as enculturation. While all humans have basic biological needs such as food, sleep, and sex, the way fulfill those needs varies cross – culturally. 2. Culture is integrated. This is known a holism, or the various parts of culture being interconnected. All aspects of a culture are related to one another and to truly understand a culture, one must learn about all of parts, not only a few. BUKU JAWABAN UJIAN UNIVERSITAS TERBUKA 3. Culture is dynamic. This simply means that cultures interact and change. Because most culture are in contact with other’s cultures, they exchange ideas and symbols. All cultures change, otherwise, they would have problem adapting to changing environments. And because cultures are integrated, if one component in the system Changes, it is likely that the entire system must adjust. 3. “A fish out of water” This expression has been used to describe someone who is living in a new culture. Such as a person which will experience a variety of emotional “up and down” lasting from week to years. Cultures adjustment can indeed be difficult and a new comers adjust in many different way. From that statement above, if you were who is sent to a new country, what are you going to do to solve the problem? √ 1. I should do study not only about the language but also about the culture. Because everything should be more different like before. 2. I should be joined and try to make a good relationship with the local people. 3. I should be familiar with their activities. And always do the best in a work. 4. I should be respected to all their communities. 4. Work values. Among employee different status, foreigners often observe a great deal of informal interaction. Subordinate often call their superiors by their first name. Some supervisor and manager have open door office policy whereby employee may enter without appointments. Could you please write down some different interactions in working activities between Indonesia and USA? BUKU JAWABAN UJIAN UNIVERSITAS TERBUKA √ In USA, employees are treated as equals and independent views are welcomed. American work culture involves a lot of meetings. These meetings need not deal with big decisions, but are more like discussions, and are centered on analyzing, planning and reviewing of a project. Opinions and ideas are shared and objections are made. Indonesia certainly has a unique work culture. For example, if the respective work cultures of Indonesia and the USA are compared, the primary difference lies in the scheduling, American work culture is stricter, regarding, timetables than its Indonesian counterpart. Honesty is must when work in Indonesia. Companies respect workers who are honest. Honesty is a great value that a worker can have. It makes other people to trust their ability in doing their works. Moreover, honesty means that a worker values the company and people they are working for.
