Discussion
Technique is the manner in which artists use and manipulate materials to achieve the desired
form, effect, and communicate the desired concept or meaning according to his/her personal
style (modern, neo-classic, etc.) The distinctive character or nature of the medium determines
the technique.
Example: stone is chiseled, wood is carved, clay is modeled and shape, metal is cast, thread
is woven
1. MINIMALISM
Minimalism seeks to take away what’s unnecessary
and leaving only what’s essential. This is probably the
most important part of contemporary art, as it has
informed so much of society.

2. FOUND OBJECTS
Taking something that people view as useless, and then using it in a unique way in order to
make artwork is one of the most important movements that currently exist in contemporary
artwork. Everything you find can be used to tell a story, or to create new diverse perspectives
that we’re looking for when we attend an art exhibition.
3. LARGE-SCALE ART
Creating something huge to express
diverse perspectives in artwork is
incredibly popular, even today. Over the
past forty years, large scale art, and art
that includes the environment has come
into its own as one of the most important
movements within contemporary art.

Collage is made by adhering flat materials such as newspaper or magazine cut outs,
printed text, illustrations, photographs, cloth, string, etc. to a flat surface. The artist
brings all the materials together in an artistic composition to get a desired effect or
bring a certain message.
Assemblage is putting together found objects like scraps, junk, paper, wood, metal,
cloth, stone, arranged in an artistic composition. The output is a three-dimensional
artwork, as opposed to a flat artwork in a collage.
Decalcomania is the process of applying gouache to paper or glass then transferring
a reversal of that image onto canvas or other flat materials.
Decoupage is done by adhering cut-outs of paper and then coating these with one or
more coats of transparent varnish.
Frottage is the technique of rubbing with a dry medium on a piece of paper which has
been placed over an object that has texture. The impression of the texture will be left
on the paper
Montage is the production of a rapid succession of images in a motion picture to
illustrate an association of ideas or a composite picture made by combining several
separate pictures.
Trapunto painting is where canvases are padded, sewn, and often filled with sequins,
beads, shells, buttons, tiny mirrors, glass, swatches and other things to make an artistic
composition.

Digital art is the term used to describe art that is made or presented using digital technology.
Graffiti is writing or drawing made on a wall or other surface, usually without permission and
within public view. Graffiti ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings, and
has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to ancient Egypt, ancient Greece,
and the Roman Empire.
Land art Earth works or earth arts is an art movement in which landscape and the work of art
are inextricably linked. It is also an art form that is created in nature, using natural materials
such as soil, rock (bed rock, boulders, stones), organic media (logs, branches, leaves), and
water which introduced materials such as concrete, metal, asphalt, or mineral pigments.
Mixed media describes artwork in which more than one medium or material has been
employed. It also refers to a work of visual art that combines various traditionally distinct visual
art media. For example, work on canvas that combines paint, ink, and collage.
Print making is the process of making artworks by painting, normally in the paper.
Prints are created by transforming ink from a matrix or through a prepared screen to a sheet
or paper or other material. Common types of matrices include metal plates, usually copper or
zinc, or polymer plates for engraving o etching; stone aluminum or polymer for lithography.
