Fostering Transfer in Multimedia Instructional Environment
In past discussions, it was emphasized that multimedia instructional resources have become an
essential component of today's educational system. Multimedia presentations that include
simulations, tutorials, games, and animations can be used to establish a valid instructional
approach. However, as the use of multimedia in educational contexts grows more ubiquitous,
questions arise regarding the efficacy of multimedia training in promoting cognitive improvement.
With this in mind, it is crucial that the transfer of knowledge from multimedia be encouraged;
otherwise, the usage of multimedia would be futile. In order to facilitate transfer in a multimedia
learning environment, the multimedia should encourage in-depth learning of abstract concepts
and discrete facts from a variety of contexts. In addition, multimedia training should build
metacognitive awareness and control of knowledge, skills, and tactics in order to facilitate the
transfer. Furthermore, because the transfer is so important to learning and performance,
instructors are obligated to proactively construct multimedia educational environments that are
specifically tailored to assist transfer. Teachers should be familiar with the fundamentals of
multimedia and the many methods for utilizing it before they build curricula and lessons since this
will ensure that multimedia is utilized to its best potential.
