1.5 INDUSTRY PROFILE
Sugar Industry is very important to the Indian National economy, because of its
multiple contributions in the shape of employment and provision of raw materials to
other industries Sugar is made by some plants to store energy that they don't need straight
away, rather like animals make fat.
People like sugar for its sweetness and its energy so some of these plants are grown
commercially to extract the sugar.Sugar is made form sugarcane, and was discovered
thousands of year ago in New Guinness. And then the route was traced to India and
Southeast Asia. India was the first to begin with the production of sugar following the
process of pressing sugarcane to extract juice and boil it to get crystals .The government
of India in 1950-51 made serious industrial development plans and has set many target
food production and consumption of sugar.
Here plant by the Government projected the license and installment capacity for the
sugar industry in its Five Year Plans. India is well known as the original home of sugar
and sugarcane. Sugar is produced in 121 Countries and global production now exceeds
120 Million tones a year. Approximately 70% is produced from sugarcane a very tall
grass with big stems which is largely grown in the tropical countries.
9
The quantum of sugar produced by a mill is determined by the factors like daily
crushing capacity, duration of crushing season and percentage of sugar recovery. [Tones
Crushed per Day (TCD), 180 days and 10-12%] - The Sugar Year (SY) is from October
to September At present, sugar mills are required to provide 10 per cent of their total
production as levy sugar (Rs 13/kg) for the Public Distribution System (PDS) Sugar is a
cyclic industry which follows a three year cycle.
India mythology supports the fact it contain legends showing the origin of sugarcane.
Today India is the second largest producer of sugarcane next to Brazil. Currently there
are about 4 million hectares of land under sugar including traditional cane sugar
sweeteners khan sari and Guru Equivalent to 26 million tones. Even in respect while crystal
sugar, India has ranked No.1 position in 7out of last 10 years. The traditional sweeteners of India
liqueur & khan sari are consumed mostly by the rural population in the country in the early 1930's
nearly 213sd of sugarcane production was used for the production of alternate sweeteners like
Gur & khandsari. As accordingly because of the better standard of living and higher incomes, the
sweetener demand has shifted to white sugar. Currently 113 of sugarcane production is used by
the Gur khandsari.
In the year 1930 there was an advent of modern sugar processing industry in india
which was started with grant of tariff protection to the sugar industry, in the year 1930-31
the number of sugar mills increased form 30to135 and in the year 1935-36 production.
was increased form 1.20 lakhs tones to 9.34 lakhs tones under the dynamic leadership of
the private sector in the year 1950-51 the car of planning for industrial development
began and government laid down target of sugar production and consumption, licensed
and installed capacity, sugarcane production during each of the five year plan periods.
India is the largest sugar consumer and second largest production of sugar in the world
according to the USDA Foregoing Agriculture serves India sugar industry has total
turnover of rs.500 billion per annum and contributes almostrs 22.5 billion to central and
state exchequer tax and excise duty every year according to the sources of Ministry of
food & Government of India.
Sugar industry is the regarded second after the textile in India as per the agro
processing industry in the currently has 453 operating sugar mills in different part of the
country India sugar industry always been a focal point for socio-economic development
in the rule .Today nearly 50 million sugarcane farmers and a large number of agriculture
10
labors are involved in sugarcane cultivation and ancillary activitives contributing to 7.5%
of the rural population.
Indian sugar industry generates power for its own requirement and even gets surplus
power for export to the grid based on byproduct base there is even production of ethanol,
an ecology friendly and renewable energy for blending with petrol. Sugar companies
have been established in large sugarcane growing state like ttar Pradesh, Maharashtra,
karnatakha, Gujarat, Tamil nadu, and Andhra Pradesh and are the six state contrburied by
utter Pradesh and Maharashtra.
India sugar industry has been growing horizontal with large number of of small sized
sugar plant set up throughout India as opposed to the consolididation of capacity in the
rest of the important sugar producing countries and seller producing countries and seller
of sugar, where there is greater convention on large capacity of sugar plants.
The sugar industry subsumes the production, processing and marketing of sugars
(mostly saccharose and fructose). Globally, most sugar is extracted from sugar cane (~80
% predominantly in the tropics) and sugar beet (~ 20%, mostly in temperate climate like
in the U.S. or Europe)Sugar
convenience
is
used
for soft drinks, sweetened beverages,
foods, fast food, candy, confectionery, baked products, and other
sweetened foods. Sugarcane is used in the distillation of rum.
Sugar subsidies have driven market costs for sugar well below the cost of production.
As of 2018, 3/4 of world sugar production was not traded on the open market. The global
market for sugar and sweeteners was some $77.5 billion in 2012, with sugar comprising
an almost 85% share, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 4.6%.

A department head must inform the HR manager of an opening in their department,
then the HR manager must obtain the job description sheet for publication either internal,
publicly, or both .then HR must find the (many) responses to that job announcement to weed
out the qualified form the unqualified applicants, Once that is completed, the interview
process must be coordinated they prepare the job description, contact the newspaper, run the
ad, field the calls, compile a list of potential candidates submit that list to the department's
hiring manager for approval and selection .contact the chosen candidates to set up
preliminary interviews and interview the candidates.
Although most interviews are with the hiring manager or their associates, not all
applicants get to meet with the department's hiring manager right away. It is not uncommon
for a company to filter out those who fail to impress the HR manager first. for their select
few who make it through the HR manager schedules interviews between the department's
hiring manager and potential candidates ,and follows up with the hiring process to establish
the new hire with the company.

Sugar Factory consists of the following five main stations:
1. Mill House
2. Boiler House
3. Power House
4. Clarification and Evaporation House
5. Boiling and Curing House
MILL HOUSE:
Mill house is the cane crushing unit which consists of cane carrier, cane cutter having
cutting knives, milling tandem, bagasse carrier and conveyor. Cane feeding to the cane
carrier is done by unloaders and feeder table. As the cane carrier moves, the cane kicker
evens out cane load in the cane carrier and then two sets of cane knives cut the cane into
small pieces. This process of cane cutting is called 'cane preparation. These cane pieces then,
pass through different mills and the juice is extracted. The mills are driven by D.C.motors.
The residue which comes out of the mill after extraction of juice is called bagasse.
BOILER HOUSE:
Boiler generates steam by burning the bagasse. The steam is used in powerhouse, boiling
house, curing house. The steam required by the Sulphitation process varies from 42-45 % on
cane crushed per hour.
POWER HOUSE:
The high pressure steam generated by the boiler is utilized for production of power by
the turbo-alternators. The power produced is used for captive needs and the surplus power is
exported to the government grid. The low pressure steam that comes out from the turbo
alternator is utilized for boiling the extracted juice.
CLARIFICATION AND BOILING HOUSE:

The juice extracted by the mills is measured by juice flow system. The measured
juice is heated in juice heater in two stages. First the juice is heated by the vapours
from fourth and third bodies of evaporator in different heaters. This heating is called
primary heating.
20

The heated juice is treated with milk of lime and sulphur-di-oxide to coagulate

maximum impurities and sent for secondary heating The secondary heating is done
with vapours from second body of evaporator and vapours from the first body or
exhaust steam.

The treated juice is passed to clarifier, where in clear juice is removed from the top
and settled mud at the bottom is separated.

To extract sugar from the mud, it is taken to vacuum filter in which juice and filter
cake are separated.

Juice is taken back to process and the mud is disposed as solid waste. Clear juice
from clarifier is taken to evaporator for evaporating its water content. First body is
heated by exhaust steam, and other bodies by the vapors of the previous body.

The total water evaporated in the evaporator is 75-80 % percent. The juice after
evaporation is called as syrup. This syrup is normally of 60 % solids of its total
weight. The syrup is then sulphited in syrup Sulphitation tower.
BOILING AND CURING HOUSE:
Sulphited syrup is taken to pan floor for making sugar crystal. Three massecuites boiling
systems is normally adopted, in which, A, B and C Massecuites are boiled. A massecuites is
formed by boiling syrup, sugar melt, 'A' light molasses and on 'B'-single cured sugar as seed.
This A- Massecuite is boiled till it attains the required size of sugar crystal and it is dropped
into crystallizers and cooled. After exhaustion of sugar in solution, the 'A' massecuite is
passed on to the centrifugals for separating sugar crystals from the massecuite. The separated
'A' sugar is bagged after drying. 'A'-Light and 'A' Heavy molasses are pumped to pan floor
and are used for making 'A'- and 'B' Massecuite respectively.
‘B’-Massecuite boiled in 'B' pans is dropped into B- Crystallizers and then it is cured in
'B'- Centrifugal machines. 'B'-heavy molasses and 'B'-single cured sugar are obtained
separately. 'B'- single cured sugar is used as seed for A massecuite. 'B'-heavy molasses is
used for making 'C'- Massecuite in C-pans. "C'-Massecuite is dropped into 'C' Crystallizers
where it is cooled. 'C'- Massecuite is then taken to 'C'-fore worker centrifugal machines for
curing. Final molasses and 'C'- single cured sugar are obtained. 'C' Single cured sugar is
again cured in another centrifugal machine in which 'C'-double cured sugar and 'C'-light
21
molasses are obtained. "C'-light molasses are taken to pan floor and is used in making 'CMassecuite. C'-double cured sugar is melted and is used in making 'A' Massecuite.
Sugar discharged from 'A' Machine is dropped on to grass hopper conveyors. By passing
hot air in hoppers the sugar is dried and taken to grader in which powder and rori's are
separated. The required grade sugar is bagged.
Crystallization

Crystallization is the next step in the manufacture of sugar. Crystallization takes place
in a single-stage vacuum pan. The syrup is evaporated until saturated with sugar. As
soon as the saturation point has been exceeded, small grains of sugar are added to the
pan, or "strike." These small grains, called seed, serve as nuclei for the formation of
sugar crystals. (Seed grain is formed by adding 56 ounces [1,600 grams]] of white
sugar into the bowl of a slurry machine and mixing with 3.3 parts of a liquid mixture:
70 percent methylated spirit and 30 percent glycerin. The machine runs at 200 RPM
for 15 hours.) Additional syrup is added to the strike and evaporated so that the original
crystals that were formed are allowed to grow in size.

The growth of the crystals continues until the pan is full. When sucrose concentration

reaches the desired level, the dense mixture of syrup and sugar crystals, called
massecuite, is discharged into large containers known as crystallizers. Crystallization
continues in the crystallizers as the massecuite is slowly stirred and cooled.

Massecuite from the mixers is allowed to flow into centrifugals, where the thick
syrup, or molasses, is separated from the raw sugar by centrifugal force.
Centrifugaling
The high-speed centrifugal action used to separate the massecuite into raw sugar crystals
and molasses is done in revolving machines called centrifugals. A centrifugal machine has a
cylindrical basket suspended on a spindle, with perforated sides lined with wire cloth, inside
which are metal sheets containing 400 to 600 perforations per square inch. The basket
revolves at speeds from 1,000 to 1,800 RPM. The raw sugar is retained in the centrifuge
basket because the perforated lining retains the sugar crystals. The mother liquor, or
molasses, passes through the lining (due to the centrifugal force exerted). The final molasses
22
(blackstrap molasses) containing sucrose, reducing sugars, organic nonsugars, ash, and water,
is sent to large storage tanks,
Once the sugar is centrifuged, it is "cut down and sent to a granulator for drying. In some
countries, sugarcane is processed in small factories without the use of centrifuges, and a
dark-brown product (noncentrifugal sugar) is produced. Centrifugal sugar is produced in
more than 60 countries while noncentrifugal sugar in about twenty countries
Drying and packaging
Damp sugar crystals are dried by being tumbled through heated air in a granulator. The
dry sugar crystals are then sorted by size through vibrating screens and placed into storage
bins. Sugar is then sent to be packed in the familiar packaging we see in grocery stores, in
bulk packaging, or in liquid form for industrial use.
Byproducts
The bagasse produced after extracting the juice from sugar cane is used as fuel to generate
steam in factories. Increasingly large amounts of bagasse are being made into paper,
insulating board, and hardboard, as well as furfural, a chemical intermediate for the synthesis
of furan and tetrahydrofuran.
The beet tops and extracted slices as well the molasses are used as feed for cattle. It has been
shown that more feed for cattle and other such animals can be produced per acre-year from
beets than from any other crop widely grown in the United States.
Quality Control
Mill sanitation is an important factor in quality control measures Bacteriologists have
shown that a small amount of sour bagasse can infect the whole stream of warm juice
flowing over it. Mosdem mills have self-cleaning troughs with a slope designed in such a
way that bagasse does not hold up but flows out with the juice stream Strict measures are
taken for insect and pest controls.
Because can spoits relatively quickly, great steps have been taken to automate the
methods of transportation and get the cane to the mills as quickly as possible. Maintaining
the high quality of the end-product means storing brown and yellow refined sugars (which
23
contain two percent to five percent moisture) in a cool and relatively moist atmosphere, so
that they continue to retain their moisture and do not become hard.
Most granulated sugars comply with standards established by the National Food Processors
Association and the pharmaceutical industry
Functions of production department
Production is the functional area responsible for tuming inputs into finished outputs
through a series of production processes. The Production Manager is responsible for making
sure that raw materials are provided and made into finished goods effectively, He or she must
make sure that work is carried out smoothly, and must supervise procedures for making work
more efficient and more enjoyable.
Five production sub-functions
In a manufacturing company the production function may be split into five sub-functions:
a. The production and planning department will set standards and targets for
each section of the production process. The quantity and quality of products
coming off a production line will be closely monitored. In businesses focusing
on lean production, quality will be monitored by all employees at every stage
of production, rather than at the end as is the case for businesses using a
quality control approach.
b. The purchasing department will be responsible for providing the materials,
components and equipment required to keep the production process running
smoothly. A vital aspect of this role is ensuring stocks arrive on time and to
the right quality.
c. The stores department will be responsible for stocking all the necessary tools,
spares, raw materials and equipment required to service the manufacturing
process. Where sourcing is unreliable, buffer stocks will need to be kept and
the use of computerized stock control systems helps keep stocks at a minimal
but necessary level for production to continue unhindered.
d. The design and technical support department will be responsible for
24
researching new products or modifications to existing ones, estimating costs
for producing in different quantities and by using different methods. It will
also be responsible for the design and testing of new product processes and
product types, together with the development of prototypes through to the
final product. The technical support department may also be responsible for
work study and suggestions as to how working practices can be improved
e. The works department will be concerned with the manufacture of products.
This will include the maintenance of the production line and other necessary
repairs. The works department may also have responsibility for quality control
and inspection. A key aspect of modern production is ensuring quality. The
term quality means fitness for purpose i.e. a product; process or service should
do exactly what is expected of it.
2.3 FIANANCE DEPARTMENT
MISSION
The Finance Department is an organization dedicated to providing quality financial,

The definitions of finance may be grouped into following three categories
.
First approach
In the words of F.W.Paish-Finance may be defined as the provision of money at the time

Internal Rate of Return for Investment
The internal rate of return (IRR) is a rate of return used in capital budgeting to measure
and compare the profitability of investments. It is also called the discounted cash flow rate of
return (DCFROR) or simply the rate of return (ROR). In the context of savings and loans the
IRR is also called the effective interest rate. The term internal refers to the fact that its
calculation does not incorporate environmental factors (e.g., the interest rate or inflation). The

In many environments, a marketing manager represents his employer in the media. He
grants interviews in an effort to promote new products, services or initiatives. He represents
the firm at charitable events and other happenings taking place throughout the community. In
times of crisis, he may also perform damage control, courting the press for the purpose of
changing a negative opinion of his company. While some marketing managers perform this
duty autonomously, others work in partnership with internal or external public relations
professionals.
In fact that man is a creature of needs and wants. Needs and want create a state of
discomfort in persons and they tend to get object those needs and wants. The size of the
market depends upon the number of persons who have both:

PRICING WERE fixed according to competitors, future and volume
2.5 PURCHASE DEPARTMENT
The Purchase department of RSCL Ltd, Plays a very important role, because
purchasing has its effect on every vital factor concerning the,
Manufacture
•
Investigatory work can be undertaken with local agricultural research centers or, if
possible, established sugar factories which will already have undertaken research into
varieties suitable for processing. After selecting a suitable variety it will be necessary
to test it to ensure that it will succeed under local conditions. However, introducing a
new variety of cane into an area may have a number of problems including:
•
Farming practices may have to change to enable the new cane type to be grown
successfully and on a sufficient scale. Farmer may not wish to invest in a new variety
of cane until a market is assured.
Cost
•
Costs Sugar production, even at the small scale, is a complex business which requires
skilled people to manage and supervise all aspects of the production, from the
collection of cane to the delivery of sugar to the market place. If these skills are not
available locally then they will have to be brought in to set up the business and to
train staff, which will add cost to the project.
Transportation
•
Transport may be required to bring cane from the fields to the factory and also to take
the product to market. If motor vehicles are used then capital, maintenance and
37
operating costs must be added to the cost of the product. If animal powered transport
is used then hire charges and feed costs are also applicable. There may also be costs
associated with the loss of the draft animal to other duties.
Maintenance
•
Equipment cannot be operated effectively without proper maintenance and repair.
Engines, electric motors, crushers and permanently sited furnaces will all need
routine maintenance if they are to operate efficiently.
•
Crusher rollers will wear with time and require re-machining which necessitates
access to a workshop with a lathe. Usually, rolls can only be re-machined once after
which they will be too small for effective crushing. Therefore spare rolls or facilities
for refacing old rolls will be required. Other spares such as bearings gears may also
be required.
Registration of suppliers
•
The suppliers are sent the registration form.
•
The respective buyers are identified
•
Scrutinize the information provided by the supplier
•
Arrange for a visit by concerned personnel if necessary
•
Include the name of approved suppliers in the list of Suppliers
RESPONSIBILITIES OF PURCHASE DEPARTMENT
•
To maintain uninterrupted flow of materials to support the development.
•
To maintain schedules.
•
To procure materials economically at a cost consistent with the quality. and service
required. However, generally all purchases may be attempted.
•
At the lowest cost.
•
To provide the necessary expertise, advice, information to the Curators..
