Name: ______________________________
• Bubbles
Purpose: To test the hypothesis that bubble making can be affected by adding sugar or salt to a
bubble-blowing mixture.
Materials:
3 plastic drinking cups
Balance
Salt
Liquid dish detergent
Sugar
Straw
Procedure:
1. Label three cups 1, 2, and 3.
2. Measure and add 5 mL of liquid dish detergent to each cup.
3. Add 150 mL of tap water to each cup. Gently stir mixture with glass rod.
4. Add 3 grams of sugar to cup 2 and stir.
5. Add 6 grams of NaCl to cup 3 and stir.
6. Dip the straw into cup 1 and blow through straw to make bubbles. Practice making bubbles
until you feel you have reasonable control over your bubble production.
7. Repeat step 6 with the other two mixtures in cups 2 and 3.
Analysis:
1. Did you observe any difference in your ability to produce bubbles using the mixture in cup 1 and
cup 2? Support your answer with examples from experiment.
2. Did you observe any difference in your ability to produce bubbles using the mixture in cup 1 and
cup 3? Support your answer with examples from experiment.
3. Propose another hypothesis related to bubble making.
Conclusions:
Write a paragraph explaining what you concluded from this experiment and the effects of sugar
and table salt on the ability to produce bubbles.
