In this book, he is forced to do his job so that he can support his family and send his brothers to school. He also discovered that he was being humiliated as he was trying to get his passbook. Not only that, at the beginning of the book, he is constantly being terrorized by police raids in the neighborhood. These events push Mark to work hard to get a good education and come to America without having to live that way. It's good that it took him away from his gangster activities and turned him into a good person, that is constantly fighting for freedom.
