Graduation Speech Rubric / Scoring Guide

OPTIONAL - If you want to be considered as a speaker for Graduation, you will have to
email your speech to Chris Porter (chris.porter@nilesschools.org) by 3:00 pm, Monday,
May 16th.
●
You must submit your written speech AND either deliver your speech in class or record
and submit a Flipgrid video of your speech

I am planning on playing these videos in class, so please let me know ahead of
time if you do not want yours shown
REQUIREMENTS
Creative title - 2 pts
Label & explain a short excerpt of your speech that really shows your personality - 3
pts
Label a place where you used a mentor text technique in your speech - 4 pts
EXTRA CREDIT: You thank people either as a formal opener or as part of your closing +2 pts
List of mentor text techniques:
-Do’s / Don’ts
-Life stories
-Discussing disappointments, mistakes, obstacles
-Discussing a thought process
-Problem / Solution
-Repetition of a phrase
-Using an illustration or example (i.e. the IQ dot
test, “math” problem from McRaven’s speech)
-Referencing past / future
-Referencing accomplishments / achievements
-Including a quote / lyrics
-Talking about something you are an expert in
-Discussing someone who changed/inspired you
-Memories from school
-Rhythm, rhyme, alliteration
-Using a definition / Defining something in your
own way
-Rhetorical questions
-Life lessons
-Metaphors (ex: McRaven’t speech “Don’t back
down from sharks, etc.)
-Mentioning trends
-Using a seemingly insignificant or small
thing/event to make a big point
–Using a count down (i.e. 10 life lessons)
-Using humor, jokes, “inside” jokes
-Using a slogan
-Referencing current events
-Giving advice
