1. In detail, describe a situation where you applied
active listening skills. Give practical examples.
Active Listening it involves an active process
where you seek to understand and analyse
information.
 To gain deeper understanding of the issues
 To obtain clarification from the lecturer
 For example, listen deliberately in a lecture or
meeting, or when receiving instructions
 During Mrs Groenewald`s class, she was telling the
students about the first assignment of the year.
She was giving out notes, hints and telling us what
is required for our assignment. We were allowed to
ask questions and write down notes, so we can
obtain good marks. We were able to refer back to
the main points of the assignment.

Practical Examples
 Doing orals in class.
 Church conference.
 Students meetings.
 Listening test in English class.
 Rugby coach giving us instructions.

Firstly, draw up a checklist for empathic
listening requirements. Secondly, analyse
your best friend`s abilities in terms of being
an empathic listener.
Checklist







Nod or shake your head where appropriate.
Maintain eye contact to show interest.
Lean towards the person to show interest.
Maintain a close personal distance.
Do not allow yourself to be distracted.
Do not interrupt the speaker.
Use gestures.
My best friend is not an empathic listener because he always
interrupts me when I try to vent to him. He`s always distracted
when I talk to him, doesn’t maintain eye contact and doesn’t
show interest or emotions. He hardly grasps the important
facts that I tell him and doesn’t offer me shoulder to cry on.
3. Describe a recent scenario involving an active
listening process between yourself and another
person. Apply all five stages of listening process
to your scenario
Saturday morning my phone rang it was my friend Siya,
he told me about the upcoming rugby match at Hoeskool
Patriot. He told me about it long time ago that we were
going there to watch the game. I now remembered that
I bought two tickets for me and him. I told him I haven’t
forgotten about it and we definitely going to be there.
