An explosive carbonation reaction: spearmint candy and diet coke May 07, 2022 Name : Ayah Alchaleh 10G1 Biology -Marwa TlaissScience fair project Background information Carbon dioxide is present in carbonated drinks. This gas is released by the water in the soda. The soda bottle's force stops the gas from escaping until the bottle is opened. That is why, if you open a can of soda and leave it open, the O2 will enter the soda and mix with the CO2, causing it to compress. 2 It's because the soda will no longer contain carbon dioxide. When a Mentos is placed into a Diet Coke, a reflex occurs. When carbon dioxide comes into contact with the surface of the mint candy, it explodes from the bottle, causing the coke to rise. Every Mentos candy has millions of small fissures (atoms) that disrupt the magnetic bonds between hydrogen atoms. In simple terms, the thin top provides a huge number of gas growth sites, leading carbon dioxide gas to flow on the Mentos layer. Due to gravity and formation, bubbles will depart the breaking point and climb to the top of the soda. The cycle will repeat, ending in another fizzy explosion. The main point of the soda geyser is to investigate the release of carbon dioxide when Mentos are dissolved in Diet Coke. According to the article of Diet Coke and Mentos eruption, In 1999, Lee Marek and his "Marek's Kid Scientists" conducted the Diet Coke and Mentos experiment on David Letterman's Late Show. A scientific professor performed the experiment in September 2005, The Diet Coke and Mentos geyser experiment became an online trend at that time.
