ACTIVITY 7 - Sustainable Ways Questions: 1. What is the stand of the current administration on open-pit mining in the Philippines? President Rodrigo Roa Duterte opposes open-pit mining and has proposed a mining ban in the Philippines. Because, he claims, they harm the ecology and marine life. Landslides are one of the dangers posed by mining. For example, when a catastrophic landslide occurred in Benguet in September 2018, the administration assumed it was caused by mining. Despite the fact that some experts believe mining was not to blame for the landslide, the government wants to safeguard public safety and has closed several of the major mining enterprises. 2. What is sustainable mining? How can it be achieved? The development of minerals and energy resources in a way that optimizes societal benefits while reducing environmental effect is known as sustainable mining. It can be accomplished through mining with greater caution and awareness of the environment, reducing water and energy consumption, minimizing land disturbance and waste generation, preventing soil, water, and air pollution at mine sites, and successfully closing and reclamating mines. 3. Do you think it is reasonable to ban open-pit mining in the Philippines? Why? Maybe. It hurts our environment and marine life, as PRRD has stated. If this continues, we have no idea what will happen to us. However, if we cease mining, the things we may obtain through mining will decrease, and we will have difficulties to obtain them. So, I'm still not sure if this is for our benefit or not.
