Su Casa - Ending Domestic Violence
Jennifer Herrera
Long Beach, CA
Can you please address why you choose to submit your resume to Su Casa, a non-profit
agency?
In my pursuit of growing as an HR professional and giving back to the community, I specifically
chose to apply to Su Casa because of the mission and values Su Casa embodies. When
reading the “About” portion on your organization's website, I was enamored with the words
“diversity” and “empowerment”. Diversity is important to me because it allows for more creative
processes to transpire and gives an innovative approach to solving problems. The
empowerment piece plays a huge role because we are able to empathize with individuals and
learn ways specific to help them. Being a part of the larger picture is a passion of mine because
the work that I will engage in with your organization can transform lives.
You majored in Business and transitioned to various Human Resource positions, can you
please share that journey with us?
As a recent graduate from Western Governors University, where I obtained my Bachelor of
Science in Business Management, I hone the required knowledge and skills to be successful in
business production and workflow. Coupled with my Human Resources experience, I have the
adaptive skills essential to be successful in the HR Coordinator position. Stepping into my first
role in the HR world at Lionsgate as Talent Acquisitions Coordinator, I was able to gain full-cycle
recruitment strategies, developed my ATS and CRM technology skills, and developed a tailored
approach to maximize efficiency and reduce time spent on repetitive tasks. One example I
attribute to my success in the role is having created a system specifically for the internship
program where interns could self-record videos responding to prompts which gave hiring
managers a better sense of the candidate in conjunction with their cover letter and resume. I
then transitioned into my next role with WSS/ Eurostar as HR Coordinator, where I was brought
on in an interim role, I assisted in the development of a tracking and compliance system for
associates. The role consisted of outreach to associates, store management, district
management, and coordination with the payroll team. In this role, I gained skills such as
management of leave of absence, issuance of emergency pay, offboarding associates, and
staying in compliance with local and federal laws.
As mentioned in the job description, we are a smaller agency. We noticed you worked for
large companies; can you please describe how you believe that experience will make you
a stronger candidate for this position?
As an individual who has experience working with larger companies, I immediately became
invested in working with a smaller agency because of the strong impact I know my work can
have. I know that my experience with both Lionsgate and WSS makes me a great contender for
the role because I have the skills necessary to adapt to varying workloads. The transition from
larger companies to a smaller agency will be seamless as I am able to take effective strategies
and systems that I have seen work at a larger scale and tailor it to fit the needs of Su Casa.
Can you please list the last three HR-related webinars/training you attended? List title,
date and your one take away from the webinar/training.
The last three pieces of training that I had been involved in are as follows:
1. Human Resources: Leadership and Strategic Impact
Feb 2022 - LinkedIn Learning
a. One takeaway from this training was developing my leadership style in a way that
can be conducive to work production, but also help to develop individuals in the
HR space to hone their skills and contribute in a more impactful way.
2. HR and Digital Transformation
Apr 2022 - LinkedIn Learning
a. One takeaway from this training was being able to interact and implement
technologies such as HRIS to better produce desired outputs.
3. Recruiting with Integrity: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB)
Nov 2022 - Lionsgate Webinar
a. One takeaway from this training was being able to identify our own unconscious
bias in relation to recruiting. Being able to successfully recruit and maintain
individuals from diverse backgrounds requires knowledge of the values and
ethics.
What are your three go-to resources/tools you use to keep you focused/organized?
Here are my top three resources/tools that I use to keep focused and organized:
1. Calendering (Google or Outlook)
a. I add in meetings, and timelines for projects, and have open availability
scheduled into my work calendar to create a seamless flow of work. This allows
me to keep on task and have instant reminders to mitigate losing track of what is
next in the workflow.
2. Notes and checklist
a. When I have assigned a task no matter the size, I am one that likes to have
somewhat of a plan to tackle it. This allows me a sense of clarity prior to jumping
into work so that I have a clear goal in mind to achieve.
3. Tracking and reflection
a. Whether it is a major project or a smaller side project, It is important for me to
track the skills that I have developed and also reflect on the process of things that
could have been approached in a way that is more efficient.
What are your three go to resources to keep you informed on HR-related compliance
issues?
1. I am actively involved in the HR world both through LinkedIn and Facebook Groups. This
helps me stay up to date on compliance as it relates to employment laws, employee
health and safety, and hiring and firing processes.
2. Utilizing HRIS technologies that send updates about upcoming changes in HR
compliance.
3. Attending training and webinars focused on keeping HR professionals adept with HR
compliance.
Lastly, are you related to anyone currently employed at Su Casa ~ Ending Domestic
Violence?
