A Day I Will Never Forget by Justin

A Day I Will Never Forget
It was a bright and sunny morning. Birds flying from tree to tree flapping their wings, Tall
building surrounding me which were visited by students everyday. Here I am today studying in one
of the worlds’ most renowned university, Harvard University. I never thought I would be able to
attend such an amazing university. Back in my secondary school life, I was just an average standard
student. My results for my exams were satisfying but were nothing compared to the top student in
my class, Sam. I was not as brilliant as Sam and I guess I will never be.
I took up Chemical engineering. It was my dream to become a chemical engineer ever since I
was young. My father had always been my role model. He was also a chemical engineer and had
more than 30 years of experience in this field. I hardly understand anything when I first started
learning Chemistry. Everything was so hectic at first. I knew very well that Chemistry was
fundamental for every chemical engineers and I had to be one of them which can score well in
Chemistry. On the first day of school, I saw many new faces, heard different languages being spoken
everywhere I go, people from all parts of the world gathered here to further their studies. Each
individual here is talented and had their own specialty. I can say that I do feel proud to be one of
those. How excited I was on the first day.
First class of the day was held in the lecture hall. I wanted to go to the lecture hall but then
only I realised, where is the lecture hall? I walked around and I saw a guard. I approach the guard
and called out to him. The guard had short hair, broad chest, well-built muscles, fierce looking and
tan. The looks on his face sent chill down my spine. Even a brave tiger would be afraid to look at him
in the eyes. I came face to face with him. “Hi! May I know the way to the lecture hall?”.
“Lecture hall? Hmm.. just walk straight up and turn left when you see a red signboard up
ahead,” replied the guard politely.
I never expected such a proper reply from him because I thought he would just reply me using a
loud worse or maybe even worse, ignore me. It seems I should never judge by its cover. I thanked
him and walked at a fast pace to class because class was about to start in 2 minutes. I would not
want to give a bad impression to my fellow colleagues and lecturer by arriving late on the first day.
I arrived right on time and managed to grab a front seat. I gave a breath of relieve and took a
couple of seconds to settle myself down, I looked around the lecture hall to observe carefully the
structure of the hall. The ceiling were high above my head and it has beautiful carvings, Those
carvings looked so fine and I was amazed at the beauty of it. “Hey! You over there. Are you listening
to me?”. My lecturer startled me when I was called. It seems that I was over enjoying the beautiful
carvings and had lose focus during class. I apologize and continued on with my lessons. “Ring! Ring!
Ring!”. That was the bell which signify the end of class for today. My class ended at12 o’clock and my
stomach was growling of hunger. It was such a hot afternoon and I just wished the blazing sun will
disappear for a while. I wandered around looking for a place to quench my thirst and to fill my
stomach. I stopped at a shop named ‘Jack’s Corner’. The shop was brightly decorated with colourful
lightings and was well decorated with paintings hung across the wall in the shop. I sat down at
empty table and a waiter attended me. I looked through the menu and ordered a cheese hamburger
and a can of soda. I watched a football match from my seat since there was a television opposite of
me. My food and drink arrived and I quickly finish it like a hungry tiger. It was so delicious and I gave
a soft burp. Luckily the noise from the television covered my burp perfectly.
After lunch, I went for a walk in the park to aid my digestion. The shady tree sheltered me
from the sun along the path and the little breeze of wind cooled me. Tall green trees in the park,
looking strong and mighty made me feel grateful for its existence. I walked along the path filled with
pieces of dried leaves along the way and it gave my body a feeling of relaxation. After walking
around the park for a quarter of an hour, I lied down on a bench I spotted along the way to rest
awhile. Little did I know that the bench was such a nice place to take a nap and I ended up sleeping
in the park for 2 hours. What a nice nap I had that day.
One cloudy night, I went to the library because I was bored. My roommates went out for
clubbing. They invited me but their offer was rejected by me since I was never interested in clubbing.
Clubbing gave me bad impression since bad things can happen anytime in a club. Although I studied
here for almost half a year, I never visited the library once. Harvard’s library was said to be one of
the famous library in the world. Knowing that fact, I said to myself “Why don’t I go take a look for
awhile”. Outside the library, the building design and size amazed me. It was so big that I started
wondering how many books were inside that amazing building. As I entered the library, the cool air
rushed out from the library and my body felt cold for awhile but I adapted quickly to the surrounding
temperature. Books were everywhere. How many books were inside? I wonder who in the right
mind has the ability to read all the books here. It would have taken me a lifetime for me to even
finish a section in that library. There was a map showing the sections. I referred the map and went to
the Science and Medical section. I used to like medical stuff when I was young and once I even tried
giving Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to my stuffed doll. How silly was I back then. I looked
through the shelves and took a book which seems interesting to me. The book was entitled, The
Human Body. Holding the book in my hands, I searched for a place to sit so that I can comfortably
read the book.
Hours went by without me realising how late it was. Most of the students already went back
and I was going to do so too. I walked towards the shelf and placed the book back to where it
belongs. While I was walking out from the library, I saw a girl going out too. I thought I was the only
one left in library but think again, looks like someone did not realise the time as well. She looked
elegant from afar. It was raining heavily but luckily I brought my umbrella. The girl seems like she
doesn’t have an umbrella. The night was late and I couldn’t help but offered myself to help her. I said
to myself, “Well, it won’t hurt to help her.” I approached her. “Hey! Is anyone going to pick you up
from here?” I said to the girl.
“Nope. I’m just hoping the rain would stop so that I can go back to my campus. How
unfortunate of me to left my umbrella in my room before I came here.”
“If you don’t mind, I can share my umbrella with you. Besides, I am not in a rush back
anyways.”
“Really?! That would be great. You sure I won’t be troubling you?”
“I’m sure. Don’t worry.”
I brought her back to the campus under my umbrella. We chatted on our way back and I got
to say, we had a nice conversation. She had a soothing yet firm voice and it was such a comfort to
me. We reached her campus and I sent her back to her room. Before going back to my campus, I
managed to ask for her name. Her name was Kylie, a name suited so well for her characters. Upon
reaching my room, I took a quick shower and went to bed. Thoughts of her filled my mind when I
was going back to my room.
The next morning I woke up, guess what, I had a dream about her. This was the first time I
had a dream about a girl. I attended class like usual but she was running through my mind the whole
time. After class, I decided to take a walk in the park hoping thoughts about her would disappear. I
went to the park and many people were present. I puzzled why were there so many people there. I
walked to the middle of the park and saw many dogs. It was a dog show happening there. So many
cute and well-groomed dogs were there that I has so much fun watching them. An announcement
was announced through the speakers that the competition was starting soon. Many people gathered
and wanted to have a good view of the competition. Obstacles were prepared for the dogs to
complete. It was my first time watching a dog show competition and it look really fun. I stood beside
a girl to get a view of the obstacles course. The competition started and all the well-trained dogs
completed the course under their master’s guide. The wind blew and the girl hair graze against my
face. It smelled like lavender. She turned to me and apologize. I was shocked. Kylie was apologizing
to me. All the thoughts about her flooded my mind again. A sudden joy filled me but I did well
concealing it behind my smile to her. We continue watching the competition but I seem to enjoy it
more with her beside me. Suddenly someone pushed her and she almost fell. Luckily I managed to
save her. She was in my arms and her soft skin pressed against my arms. The tenderness of her skin
carved a smile on my face. This feeling of happiness felt good. When the competition finished, I
treated her a cup of tea at a nearby café. Just like the time where I brought her back to her campus,
we had a great time talking to each other. We seem to get along well although this was only the
second time I met her. I spent the day with her and before I realised, I spent most of my time with
her everyday.
Ten years passed. I worked in a famous company and I had quite an impressive amount of
pay. My day was filled with work and I always skip my meals. Even my parents used to get worried
over my busy life but now they will feel better since I am no longer a bachelor. I had a wife and guess
who she was, it was Kylie. We were married for 2 years and today was our anniversary. I specially
applied for a holiday to spent the day with her on our anniversary. I decided to bring her back to
Harvard’s University, where we first met. Before that, I asked her to follow me and asked her to
sleep because I was going to bring her somewhere special. The car was filled with soothing music
which helped with us to feel relax. Upon arriving at the library, I woke her up and she was surprised.
She saw the library and looked at me. “Why are we here?” she said.
“Don’t you remember what day is today?”
“Today? Today is the 1st of December.”
“And?”
“That’s right! Today is our wedding anniversary.”
“Yes it is, honey. I brought you here because this was the place we first met”
“It sure brings back memories. How long has it been since we first met? 10 years?”
I laughed and said, “Exactly 10 years!”
I brought her in and we spent the evening there. 10 years ago I visited this library alone but
now, I have a wonderful wife with me, that very girl I met 10 years ago is now my wife. The library
looks similar now and back then except the chairs and table had been changed.
“Darling, I have something to say”, she said to me.
“What is it?”
“I went to the doctor the other day because I felt ill.”
“Why did you feel ill?”
“You wouldn’t believe what I heard from the doctor. I’m pregnant. Today would be the third
week already.”
I was shocked and happy at the same time. On our anniversary, my wife told me she was
pregnant. I guess the library was a meaningful place for both of us. Our 2nd anniversary was a day I
will never forget.
