This novel starts of by introducing us to the anonymous narrator's one sided love to Desiree.We get to
experience all of the narrator's tme and atenton he has for Desiree.A love that inspires the narrator to
write poetry.Throughout the novel we get to experience the ever changing nature of their relatonship
between the narrator and Desiree.
The narrator is an orphan raised by catholics, untl he was expelled.He fnds work as a journalist,but
jailed for 18 years.He contnues through life to fnd his place in this world.He remains obsessed with his
childhood sweetheart Desiree the postmaster's daughter.Who awake the poet in the narrator.The
narrator used to write poems for Desiree and buy her 'small things, wit big intentons' and send these to
Desiree.'She appreciated the eforts, yet dismissed them as heart-warming but unnecessary'.
After the narrator got out of prison he soon found out that Desiree was married to an over weight
mathematcian Amazu from iigeria.But a few months later Desiree declares that she was ready to leave
he husband Amazu and go leave with the main character.Finally Desiree and the narrator were together
and they spent a lot of tme at '144 Verona Estate'.But the narrator wasn't happy when he was in a
relatonship with Desiree.The narrator was being abused by Desiree ' am defenseless against her callous
abuse' which pushed the narrator into Mercedes's hands.
The narrator's chance meetng with Mercedes, from cuba.'Her presence lifts me from a dreariness and
restores'.Well the possibility that not all is lost.Through his liaison with Mercedes we see the narrator's
soul.But just as am hopeful that the narrator's life is taking a beautful turn Mercedes drops a
bombshell that she is going back to Cuba with her dying father.
Soon after the narrator receives the news that Desiree wants to see him at the hospital but when he got
to the hospital it was already late, her heart failed and she was brain dead.The narrator never got the
change to hear what Desiree wanted to tell him.
The elusive nature of love is a recurring theme in this novel.The narrator really loved Desiree even
though Desiree took the narrator's love for granted the narrator loved Diseree tll the end.
n conclusion the narrator believed and stood by his love for Desiree.The prose is rich.The emoton
melancholic.The exploraton of love and efect of trauma on an inner self shows that the novel is well
writen and it is on theme.
