Lesson 1: Why we classify Worksheet: Characteristics of fire All fire requires fuel and oxygen in order to burn. If a fire is starved of these then it will die. In bushfires, burning embers can move up to ten kilometres downwind and start new fires. Fires can influence their surroundings by heating the air around them, creating strong winds that can direct the fire to move in a particular direction. The radiant heat and high levels of carbon dioxide produced by fires can be equally as dangerous to anyone caught in the area of a bush fire.
