Drill – Group Activity Work on the problem. 1) Ask: a. What does the problem ask for? b. What are the given facts? c. What will you do to solve for the answer? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Compare the following quantities by writing the symbol < or > on the line. P 2,500.00 pesos savings _____ P 1,240.00 pesos savings ½ meter of cloth _____ 2 meters of clothes 10 degrees Celsius _____ 0 degree Celsius 5.5 lbs weight gain _____ 8 lbs weight gain 10% mark-up _____ 5% mark-up 2. REVIEW: Arrange the numbers according to values. Start from the one that is closed to zero. 1. 2, ¾, 1, 0.5, 7 2. ½, 3. 6. 2/5, 0.75 3. 5, 15/2, 2, 8/3, 4 3. MOTIVATION: Activity Title: “How does your mother budget your family income?” Post the following questions to the pupils. 1. How much is your family monthly income? 2. What are things that make up your monthly expenses? Ask pupils to list them down with specified amount allotted to each part. 3. What is the total amount of your family’s monthly expenses? 4. Is it more than or less than your family’s monthly income? 5. What happens if your expenses are more than your family’s income? Do you still have a savings? B. Developmental Activities 1. PRESENTATION: Using the data given by the pupils, choose a set of figures wherein the total amount of expenses is greater than the monthly income. From here, explain that such situation requires the existence of negative numbers. What are negative numbers? What are positive numbers? What numbers make up the set of integers In the set of integers, what number represented the income? How about the expenses? Address: Brgy. DISCUSSION Discuss that real-life situations can be represented by integers. For example, if a temperature reading is 25 degrees above zero, we say that it is +25. If a temperature is 25 degrees below zero, we say that it is -25. Below are some examples of real-life situations that are represented by positive and negative numbers. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. POSITIVE NUMBERS Gaining weight of 2 kg Moving 8 steps forward Going 3 km upstream Depositing 1000 pesos Travelling 5 miles to the East 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. NEGATIVE NUMBERS Losing weight of 2 kg Moving 8 steps backward Going 3 km downstream Withdrawing 1000 pesos Travelling 6 miles to the West Pupils may also be asked to give a real-life situation that can be described by a number and let them write on the board the integer that represents it. The set of integers is the set …, -5, -4, -3, -2, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, +3, +4, +5,… a. To further describe the set of integers, show an illustration of a number line containing negative numbers, positive numbers and zero. Emphasize that the number zero is located at the middle of the number line and will be the reference point in locating the negative numbers and the positive numbers. Where are the negative numbers located on the number line? Where are the positive numbers located on the number line? b. Introduce numbers on the number line that are called the mirror images or opposites by letting them imagine that they are folding the number line at point 0. Any integer has an opposite. List down some integers and ask the pupils to give the opposite of each given integer. c. The number line is used to compare and arrange the integers. How do we compare a positive number and a negative number? How do we compare both positive numbers? How do we compare both negative numbers? 3. FIXING SKILLS/PRACTICE EXERCISES Write the integer presented by each situation. a. The temperature is 18° C below 0. b. The altitude is 75 m above sea level. c. The corals are 15 m below sea level. d. He has a weight loss of 5kg. e. She spent P375.00 for a dress. Address: Brgy. GENERALIZATION: How can we describe the set of integers using a number line? C. Application Mr. Coronel has P18,000.00 in his bank account. He withdrew P7,500.00 and withdrew P3,200.00 again. After two withdrawals, how much money is left in his bank account? If he wants to maintain a P10,000.00 bank balance, how much money must he deposit in his account? IV. EVALUATION: A. Represent each real-life situation with an integer. 1. Mary moves 3 steps backward as she dances. 2. Sam lost 2 pounds after a week of doing her routine exercise 3. Roby drives 15 meters southward along EDSA. 4. Mrs. Santos deposits P20,000.00 as a saving for her son’s college education. 5. Renz graduated from elementary 12 years ago. After writing the integers that represented the above items, arrange these integers from least to greatest. V. ASSIGNMENT: Solve the given problem. 1. Neil is a working student who earns P1,000.00 per week for his tutorial. The following are his expenses in a month. Food P1,760.00 Transportation P 320.00 School supplies P300.00 Cellphone Load P200.00 Social Activities P450.00 Miscellaneous P800.00 Calculate his expenses and determine whether or not he can make enough to afford his lifestyle. Does he still have some money to save? As a pupil, why is it important to save money? Prepared by: JAYSON S. EVANGELISTA Teacher I Noted: FRANKLIN S. ALEJO Principal I Address: Brgy.
