Mr. Shaw’s Education Review
This handout is to help you remember the topics we discussed today to manage
your diabetes, quit smoking, and reduce your risk of blood clots in the future.
Diet Education for Diabetes


Consistency is key
o Be consistent in what you eat and when
you eat it
Keep a diabetic diary
o Write down what you eat, when you eat
it, how you feel, your medications,
exercise, and glucose levels
Smoking Cessation Education



Quitting smoking will reduce your risk of future
blood clots and improve the management of your
diabetes
Risk factors related to diabetes and smoking:
o Heart and kidney disease
o Poor blood flow in legs and feet
o Retinopathy in the eyes
o Damage to nerves in arms and legs
Smoking and diabetes combined is a likely cause of
the ulcer you had in your foot and the blood clot that
was removed from your leg.
Deep-Vein Thrombosis Prevention


Managing your diabetes and quitting smoking will
greatly reduce your risk of developing another blood
clot
Other ways to reduce risk:
o Stay hydrated!
o Get active, light exercise throughout the day
o Discuss weight loss with your doctor
As you review this education
and begin to implement this
into your daily life, you may
have additional questions.
