5.02 Speed and Velocity Questions
Complete the following 11 questions about speed, velocity, and acceleration.
Part 1: Speed and Velocity
1. Can the displacement of an object be greater than the distance traveled? Explain. No
because the displacement of an object can be either equal to or less than the distance travelled
by the object
2. Compare and contrast average speed and constant speed. constant speed is where the
speed is the same throughout and instantaneous speed is speed given at any moment
and average speed is a total distance traveled divided by the amount of time it took
to travel it
3. While driving in your car, can your instantaneous speed be greater than your average
speed? Explain. The car is instantaneous speed could be greater than the
cars average speed.
4. Describe a NASCAR vehicle’s velocity as it goes around a track at constant speed. The
race cars have the same speed as they go around the track, but at every turn and
straight way it's velocity changes because it changes directions
5. Why do cities have speed limit signs instead of velocity limit signs? Velocity measures
the speed and direction so there would be velocity signs everywhere
6. Describe the motion of a car that has an acceleration of 0 m/s2. The motion of the
object will be zero because the velocity is constant and the acceleration is zero
7. Describe your acceleration as you skate down your neighborhood sidewalk. As I skate
down my neighborhood sidewalk, my acceleration would speed up until i get to the
bottom of the hill.

Solve the following problems. Be sure to show your work.
8. A motorcycle is moving at a constant speed of 90 km/h. How long does it take the
motorcycle to travel a distance of 100 km? T= 100/90 or 1.1/hour
9. The world’s fastest elevator is in Taipei, Taiwan. It can lift passengers 1,010 m in 39 s.
What is the speed of this elevator? d= 1,010m T = 39s 1,010 / 39s = R=25.9
10. Evelyn walked to the store a distance of 1.6 km in 30 min. What is her average speed in
m/s? 30 min * 60 seconds = 1800 so 1.6km / 1800 = 0.0009 km/s or 0.00055m/s
11. An airplane starts at rest and accelerates down the runway for 25 s. At the end of the
runway, its final velocity is 75 m/s east. What is its acceleration? 75m/s -0/25s = 3m/s
