Course Description:
Focuses on application of the nursing process to maternal-newborn patients from the perspective
of Gordon’s Functional Health patterns. Emphasizes care of maternal-newborn patients at risk
for or with actual nutritional-metabolic, activity-exercise, role-relationship, and cognitiveperceptual dysfunctional health patterns and adult patients with sexuality-reproductive
dysfunctional health patterns. Related pharmacology and cultural practices and beliefs are
integrated.
Course Student Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Utilized Gordon’s functional health patterns as a basis for assessment with emphasis on
maternal-newborn patients at risk for or with actual nutritional-metabolic, activity-exercise,
role-relationship, and cognitive-perceptual dysfunctional health patterns and adult patients
with sexuality-reproductive dysfunctional health pattern.

2. Discuss and analyze relevant pathophysiology, diagnostic tests, interventions, medications,
and nursing implications for patients at risk for or with actual nutritional-metabolic, activityexercise, sexuality-reproductive, role-relationship, and cognitive-perceptual dysfunctional
health patterns.
3. Apply the nursing process to maternal-newborn patients at risk for or with actual nutritionalmetabolic, activity-exercise, role-relationship, and cognitive-perceptual dysfunctional health
patterns and adult patients with sexuality-reproductive dysfunctional health pattern.
4. Apply health promotion concepts, illness prevention, identification of barriers to care and the
impact of cultural practices/beliefs to maternal-newborn patients at risk for or with actual
nutritional-metabolic, activity-exercise, role-relationship, and cognitive-perceptual
dysfunctional health patterns and adult patients with sexuality-reproductive dysfunctional
health pattern.
5. Discuss the teaching and self-care requirements for maternal-newborn patients at risk for or
with actual nutritional-metabolic, activity-exercise, role-relationship, and cognitiveperceptual dysfunctional health patterns and adult patients with sexuality-reproductive
dysfunctional health pattern.

Methods of Instruction:
Experiences are formal classroom presentations, group discussions, and individual learning
activities designed to introduce and clarify the theoretical basis for nursing practice.
Examinations are given at intervals to assess student progress. Case studies and student-led
activities are important active learning modalities and are supported by educational research.
These activities may include games, collaborative presentations, guest speakers, and simulations.
Canvas will be used for this course and classroom materials may be found there.

Testing/Grading:
The grade for this class will be derived from:
3 unit exams (50 points each) =150 points
Final Exam (50 points) =Total 200 points

A theory grade of 2.0 (77%) or above is required to successfully pass this course.
Each exam will include one (1) to five (5) math calculation problems.

Degree Nursing Student Program Handbook for testing policies and the grading scale used for all
nursing courses.
Resources:
If you are having difficulty with the course content or obtain less than a 2.0 (77%) on an exam,
you should make an appointment to see your instructor for guidance. Your textbook has critical
thinking exercises and questions at the end of each chapter and a companion study guide that
should be reviewed on a regular basis. NCLEX-RN review books are useful tools that provide
practice with NCLEX-style questions.
Cheating:
See “Student Misconduct” in the 2019 -2020 SCC Associate Degree Nursing Program Student
Handbook for policies about cheating. If a student has found to be cheating, he/she will receive a
zero (0) for the exam/assignment and will be dismissed from the program.
