Water Quality Lab Data Collection Sheet
Question: Are there differences between different sources of water (i.e.
treated vs. untreated)?
Hypothesis: I think treated water will be _______________________than
untreated water.
Water source: _________________
Day 1
Procedure (steps)
Clarity
1. Observe the sample in the beaker.
2. Record the appearance in the table, include colour.
Chlorine
1.
2.
3.
4.
Fill a test tube halfway with water from your sample.
Add 5 drops of silver nitrate solution to the test tube
Record any changes in the appearance of the water.
Label your test tube using masking tape.
Hardness
1. Label an Erlenmeyer flask using masking tape.
2. Use a graduated cylinder to measure 100 mL of water from your
sample
3. Pour the water into an Erlenmeyer flask
4. Add 1 mL of Castille to the flask
5. Cap the flask with a stopper and shake for 30 s.
6. Record your observations
Test for living organisms
1. Label an Erlenmeyer Flask using masking tape. Include your class
and group number
2. Use a graduated cylinder to measure 100 mL of water and pour it into
the flask.

5.
6.
7.
Add 5 drops of bromothymol blue to the flask.
Place the stopper in the flask.
Record the appearance of the solution.
Give the flask to Mr. McGinitie who will store it.
After 24 hours record the appearance again.
Complete your table and hand it in. Mr. McGinitie will combine all the data
and give you a complete table with all the water sources.
Day 2
With the complete class table, answer the following questions. If you do not
know the answer you may look for the answer in your textbook or online.
1. How was clarity measured? Which water source(s) had the best
clarity, and which had the worst? /3
2. Did any samples contain chlorine? How did you know? Where does
this chlorine come from? /3
3. Which samples had hard water? How did you know? Why is water
hardness a concern? /3
4. Which samples had living organisms? How did you know? Why or
why not? /3
