What is there to keep the patient alive and healthy?
Robert Liston May 1842
Robert Liston was a Scottish
surgeon who was famous for his
quick surgery, particularly
amputating (cutting off) arms and
legs. His quickest operation time
was 30 seconds in removing a
man’s leg. In his most famous
surgery, Liston amputated the leg
of a patient in 2 and a half
minutes.
However the patient died from
infection soon after. During
surgery Liston had accidently cut
off two of his assistants fingers,
he also died from infection soon
after. A third man was watching
the operation take place. Liston
accidently sliced through the coat
of the observer, who was so
shocked he died on the spot.
This is the only known surgery
with a 300% death rate.
