7
Distinguish text-types according to purpose and
features (Classification and Description)
What’s In
Factual texts are written for various purposes to inform, to instruct,
or to persuade by giving facts and information.
There are different text types according to purpose and features:
classification, time order, enumeration, explanation, problem-solution,
cause and effect, and comparison and contrast.
What’s New
A text is a piece of writing that you read or create. The type of text
depends on their purpose, structure and language features. Text types
according to purpose and features are identified based on the literary
characteristics and the way in which the author expresses in writing. The
writer uses different forms and standards of composition for a variety of
purposes.
In this lesson, Classification and Description text types will be
discussed. It will help you identify its purpose. It is designed to help you
understand the two text types better and to help you create your own
piece of writing.

Study the example below:
Friendships
Although playing with their friends is something that most children
enjoy, friendships are not all the same. Some friendships are built from a
long-term familiarity with one another, and other friendships can spring
up just by spending one fun day together. Not all friendships result in daily
to weekly meet ups. Long-term friendships can be lasting using
communication tools like the Internet and telephone, while other
friendships result in occasional get-togethers, sometimes months or even
years apart. Children seek different things in friendship, meaning, certain
friendships result around active playground games such as, hide and seek,
while other friendships may occur due to school related activities and
common interests.
Guide Questions
1. What is the main idea of the text?
________________________________________________________________________
2. What supporting details about friendship are stated?
________________________________________________________________________
3. What do you think is the purpose of the text?
________________________________________________________________________
What is It?
Classification is a type of text that starts with presenting a main
idea followed by an explanation of a series of secondary or sub-ideas.
The main idea of this text is about friendship. Different types of
friendships are discussed in the text:
9
•
built from a long-term familiarity with one another;
•
spring up by spending one fun day together
•
long term friendships with the use of communication tools
•
friendship from occasional get-togethers
•
built from active playground games
•
built due to school related activities and common interests
The supporting ideas about friendship are stated for the reader
to see the difference types of friendships.
A Description text type provides sensory and descriptive
details to help the reader visualize an idea or a concept. It basically
answers the What, Who, Where, When, Why and How of a topic.
Clue words are also used to effectively write a description text
type. The examples of which are: such as, for instance, in addition,
also, and specifically.
Study the example below:
Corona Virus
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a
newly
discovered coronavirus.
Most
people
infected
with
the
COVID-
19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover
without requiring special treatment.
The virus that causes COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through droplets
generated when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or exhales. These droplets
are too heavy to hang in the air, and quickly fall on floors or surfaces. You can
be infected by breathing in the virus if you are within close proximity of
someone who has COVID-19, or by touching a contaminated surface and then
your eyes, nose or mouth.

The main idea of the text is COVID-19. It talks and describes ideas
about COVID-19, who can be infected, and how it can be transmitted.
What’s More
Activity 1
Directions: Read the short text. Answer the questions that follow.
Clouds are collections of millions of water droplets or ice crystals.
They are formed high above the Earth's surface and sometimes at ground
level. The three main forms of clouds are cumulus, stratus, and cirrus.
Cumulus clouds are puffy with broad, flat bases. A few small cumulus
clouds signal fair weather. Stratus clouds are flat, sheetlike clouds. They
normally mean warm or possibly wet weather. Cirrus clouds are wispy
clouds found at great heights. Full of ice crystals, these clouds often
indicate stormy weather. So, the time you leave the house, look up the
sky, observe the clouds, and find out whether you will bring an umbrella
or pack up a raincoat.

Elephants are mammals that are distinguished by their large or
massive size and long trunk which is used in breathing, smelling,
touching, feeding, drinking, lifting heavy objects, and trumpeting. They
are usually remarkable for their tusks which are extremely long teeth that
keep growing during the elephant’s life. Their tusks are made of ivory for
which elephants have always been hunted. Adult elephants have little
hair on their thick, wrinkled skin; but their tails are tipped with wiry hair,
and their eyelashes can be over five (5) inches long. Elephants are great
eaters consuming up to 225 kilos of leaves, bark, fruit, and grasses a day,
and up to 40 gallons of water. Elephants have been a great help to people
for at least 5,000 years because of their size and strength.

It’s been many years ago that dogs animals that have
been living with people. Dogs can be classified in a number
of different ways. For example, they can be classified by
breed. These breeds include Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Poodles,
Husky, Labrador, and countless others. Dogs can also be
classified by their role in the lives of their masters and the
work they do. For example, a dog might be a family pet, a
working dog, a show dog, or a hunting dog.
__________3.
The characteristic of a matter that can be readily
observed without changing its composition is called physical
property. Some physical properties are specific to each phase
of material. However, not all properties of matter can be
observed immediately. Sometimes, the composition of a
material has to change first before a certain property can be
observed. This property is known as chemical property.

B. Directions: Read the text carefully. Use a graphic organizer to write
the classification of the planets in the Solar System.
Planets in the Solar System
The planets in the Solar System are grouped into different
classifications. These are Inferior, Superior, Inner, Outer and Gas or Jovian
Planets. Mercury and Venus are planets inside the orbit of the Earth and
are called Inferior Planets. Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune
Superior Planets are called Superior planets because they are outside the
orbit of the Earth.
The planets inside the asteroid belt are called the
Terrestrial Planets. These are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. Jupiter,
Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are planets outside the asteroid belt, and they
are called Outer planets. The planets like Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and
Neptune are also classified as Gas or Jovian Planets because they are larger
than the terrestrial planets and are composed mainly of gas and liquid.
