Chapter 27 Notes
Ecosystem combines living and nonliving.
Pop. Growth=birth + immigration
-birth rate and immigration rate must balance out in order for growth in a country
Pop. Death=death + emigration
-emigration mostly stays within the world
R = birth – death + imm. – emm.
(r = growth)
K=carrying capacity
The s-curve: most organisms are in this category
R = +: Population is growing; we are currently in this from a global standpoint
R = 0: Population is neutral
R = -: Population is declining
r-selected: mosquitoes
k-selected: elephants
r-selected are small and fast reproducing; plants, insects, etc.
Parent irresponsibly
k-selected are large and reproduce responsibly; mammals in general
Parent responsibly
Erly loss: dies young
Constant loss: age doesn’t matter
Late loss: dies older
