Possessive ‘s
‘s is normally used to show possession, that there is a relationship between two things or that
something belongs to another.
Example: John’s car (=The car of John. The car belongs to John.)
Singular nouns even the ones
ending in -s, add ‘s.
Example: We go Ange’s house every
weekend.
Mr. Lewis’s dog is brown.
Plural nouns ending in -s, only add
the apostrophe (').
Plural nouns not ending in -s, add
's:
Example: That is my friends’ car.
My cousins’ house is really big.
Example: The children’s toys are all
over the room.
The men’s toilet is disgusting.
To express that two people own
something, we mention both names
and we add 's after the second
name.
Example: That girl is Ken and
Bob's sister.
Nina's and Lisa's teacher is very
happy.
To express that two people own two
(different) things, you add 's to
each name:
Example: Those are Mike's and Billy's
tablets (= Billy has one tablet and Mike
has one tablet)
Susan's and Michael's sweaters are
green
