Food in schools Lesson procedure Stage Warmer Game: Sports Trivia Activity (slide 3) For this warmer, students will play a “Sports trivia” game! First, the teacher will ask three questions to students to see who can answer them correctly. 1. What country hosted the 2006 world cup? (Germany) 2. Who is considered the best basketball player ever? (Michael Jordan) 3. What country invented the game “Soccer”? (England) After answering the questions, place students into groups of 3 for breakout rooms. Next, tell groups to make 3 or 4 more sports trivia questions. Give groups 3 minutes to work on their questions. After 3 minutes, reorganize breakout rooms and place one group with another so students can quiz each other. Warmer activity – no feedback stage is required; only listen for slips and offer corrections Timing 0:00 – 0:15 Language Task 1 Have you ever…? Language Task 2 Food in schools Final Task Fitness & health program pitch (slide 4) In this activity, students will ask “Present Perfect” questions to each other. Ask students to individually create 5 questions that relate to “sports or education”. Give students an example and emphasis the participle verbs needed to create the question. (i.e. Have you ever gone to a professional sports match? / Have you ever taken a Post-Graduate course?) Give students 4 minutes to create their questions… Next, place students in pairs for breakout rooms. They will ask and answer their questions with each other. They should also ask follow-up questions to carry their interview for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, reorganize breakout rooms and place students with a different partner for another round of conversing. Give general feedback during the activity. (slide 5) For the second language task, students will talk about the foods students eat when they are at school and discuss the health risks involved. Place students into groups of 3 for breakout rooms. Tell students they will have a discussion about the foods served in schools today; whether it is helping or hurting the health of our children. Send this link to students: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igxiroCXT0A) and ask for volunteers in each group to screenshare for the group (don’t forget to remind volunteers to enable screensharing sound!) After watching the video, students will discuss these questions: (copy and paste using the “chat”) 1. Is “what you eat” important to you? What is your opinion on “healthy eating”? 2. Is all junk food unhealthy for children? 3. If you have/had children, do/would you monitor what your children are eating at school? 4. Would it matter to you if your child is overweight? Why or why not? Monitor grammar and sentence structures. Give feedback at the end of the activity. (slide 6) For the last activity, students will create a fitness and health program for their institutions. Place students into groups of 3 for breakout rooms. The objective for students is to create 3 fitness ideas for students and propose 4 healthy foods that all students have to eat on a daily basis. Students should state their reasons why their ideas need to be implemented as well. Give students 7 minutes to come up with ideas for the fitness and health programs. After 7 minutes, close breakout rooms and have students talk about their ideas as a whole class. 0:15 – 0:30 0:30 – 0:45 0:45 – 1.00 Monitor student production.
