ACTIVITY 4
1. Discuss what are Life Saving and Water Rescues.
 Lifesaving is the act involving rescue, resuscitation and first aid. It often refers to
water safety and aquatic rescue; however, it could include ice rescue, flood and
river rescue, swimming pool rescue and other emergency medical services.
 The purpose of emergency response, a water rescue shall be defined as any
incident that involves the removal of victim(s) from any body of water other than a
swimming pool. Any incident involving the rescue or removal of a victim from any
body of water, moving or still such as lakes, ponds, rivers, flooding.
2. Give what it means by Life Saving and Water Rescues in:
a.1. Open Waters
 Now in its third edition, Open Water Lifesaving – The United States Lifesaving
Association Manual is the only comprehensive training manual for beach and
open water lifeguards in accordance with USLA certification requirements. The
full color lifeguard manual contains over 400 pages covering everything from
basic information for rookie training to useful reference material for experienced
lifeguard supervisors and managers.
 In open water you are able to see how far you have swam and have the freedom
of being at one with nature.
 Give its extensive history, the fire service is fairly new to the open water rescue.
As more people have the means to venture into the open water with wave
runners, kayaks, two- day scuba classes, and stand-up paddle boards,
firefighters are often thrust into the role of open water rescuer.
a.2. Swimming Pool
 In a pool you are restricted to the length of the pool which can also be boring
swimming up and down wall to wall. It can also be easier to track your distance
outside swimming around a lake, in comparison to doing laps in a pool.
 A swimming pool water rescue may be made as a last resort by a person who is
a strong swimmer, provided he is willing to take the risk involved. The rescuer
approaches the drowning person from the rear even though it involves circling
the victim.
