Passage Analysis Model + Punctuation Practice
Directions:
1. Read the following student model once for content.
In this passage Shakespeare uses foreshadowing to show the importance of
moderation and how plants are like people they can be used for good things as well as
bad. Friar Lawrence is out in his garden picking flowers and plants and he says “May
for virtues excellent, none but for some, and yet all different.” This quote conveys how
there is the good and the bad to everything in the world. In regards to Romeo and Juliet
their love is a good thing because it could end the feud between the Montagues and the
Capulets but it can also be a bad thing result in sorrow and turn their love poisonous.
Friar Lawrence continues “Virtue itself turns vice, being misapplied, and vice
sometimes by action dignified.” This quote demonstrates how good things can turn bad
if they are misused. Similarly Friar Lawrence says “The earth that’s nature’s mother is
her tomb; what is her burying grave, that is her womb.” This quote portends the
outcome of Romeo and Juliet’s forsaken love. Shakespeare using the words “tomb” and
“womb” shows how once a person leaves their mother’s “womb” or safety zone they
could end up in a tomb if they misuse good things. For example Romeo and Juliet
keeping their love a secret is one way that they are misusing their good virtue. Ever
since Romeo and Juliet fall in love Shakespeare hints at the reader that it won’t last very
long. Finally Shakespeare uses plant metaphors to foreshadow Romeo and Juliet’s
death.
