LESSON 2: Historical Foundation of Education
ACTIVITY – Read the quote from the famous John Dewey then answer the
following questions:
“When a school introduces and trains child of society into membership
within such a little community, saturating him with the spirit of service, and
providing him with the instruments of effective self-direction, we shall have
the deepest and best guaranty of a larger society which is worthy, lovely
and harmonious.”
ANALYSIS – Let’s Analyze
Answer the following questions:
What is the function of schools according to John Dewey’s statement?
Dewey believes that schools are social institutions that may and should be used to
provoke and build a better society. Wherein schools are places where we not only
learn facts and figures, but also how to live.
Who creates schools?
School is an institution created by society.
What is the relationship between schools and society?
Education is a societal function that emerges from the nature and character of
society. To ensure its existence, stability, and convenience, society attempts to
sustain itself by maintaining its functions and institutions, one of which is education.
