In partnership with
This summit will serve as a
global platform for developing
a shared vision of higher
education in the pursuit of
Sung-Chul Shin
educational excellence and
President, KAIST
innovation. Leaders from
higher education, industry and government will explore the
new roles and responsibilities for universities that the new
landscape of the Fourth Industrial Revolution generates.
Innovation is our institutional DNA. The Korean government
founded KAIST in 1971 during Korea’s budding industrial
stage to educate elite scientists and engineers committed to
economic growth in Korea. Since then, KAIST has been the
trailblazer of innovation, advanced science and technology,
and entrepreneurship. It is now one of the most innovative
universities in the world.
We are currently on an upward path to becoming a university
that will contribute to the happiness and prosperity of
humankind beyond Korea with unwavering innovation. We
will continue to strive to create new technological, economic
and social value under Vision 2031, a blueprint for becoming
a “global value-creative world-leading university”. This
long-term, innovative, strategic plan – well equipped with our
core values of creativity, challenge and caring – will enable
our unimpeded academic progress towards cutting-edge
research that will better serve the world.
The summit at KAIST will provide a creative environment
for innovation and collaboration between distinguished
participants. Sharing visions and experiences will inspire all
in their innovation initiatives.
I look forward to welcoming you to the beautiful spring
campus of KAIST in 2019.

education, Times Higher Education for the Innovation and
Impact Summit 2019. The summit will build on THE’s global
dialogue to unite leaders of the best and most ambitious
universities with world-class policy-makers, researchers,
and companies that are shaping our future around the vital
questions on university impact, next April 2-4 in Daejeon,
South Korea.
The 2019 Impact and Innovation Summit will bring together
leading experts to unravel the opportunities and challenges,
successes and risks, of this new era of the Fourth Industrial
Revolution. During the three days of critical keynotes and
panel debates, networking events and workshops, we will
tackle the most pressing concerns for leaders on the culture
of artificial intelligence, the nature of industry collaboration,
and the development of future learning infrastructure.
How can established universities responsibly create
knowledge, build partnerships, attract investment, protect
their missions and adapt their culture in a new technologyled world? How may they safeguard their legacies and their
future? How can we understand and evaluate their impact?
